Problem Booting up a maxtor

I have a 60gb/2mb/7200rpm maxtor that i use as a slave drive. it works, but it doesnt boot up properly.

whenever i'm booting up, system would hang and give me "error loading primary slave", referring to the maxtor. at that point, i press cntrl alt del and then it reboots, then i hear drive spinning up and everything goes fine.

so far, i've changed my mobo/proc & psu and it still gives me the same error (new psu -> ocz 450w modstream). problem just occurs on cold boots. on warm boots and restarts, i have no problem with the drive.

what's my problem?
 
If it only happens from a cool boot then it sounds like the drive is taking to long to spin up to speed.
Therefore the mobo checks its there before its ready.

Try disableing the quick boot options in the bios.
That will give the drive more time before its checked.

Also I would check the drive out with some of the drive checking tools just incase there is an underlieing problem which could cause the drive to fail suddenly.

Or the PSU might not be enough to spin up and power everything under a full cold boot load.

If you have a buddy that will let you try a bigger/qaulity PSU see if that helps.

 
it's not the psu. i got a new one cuz i thought this was the problem.

i've tried to boot up with minimal components and still have the problem with the drive.

Any closre to figuring it out yet, from what you posted, I looked back, you might have a drive going bad afterall. Get it to spin up again on a warm boot, get your info and RMA the drive.
 
That sounds exactly like a motor problem actually. When motors get tired they will take a long time to get going from cold. Once they are going, however, it won't be a problem for them to spin up on demand.
 
so is there an ETA on the death of the drive? :(

no can do on the RMA cuz the drive is 2+ years old and was bought oem (30 day warranty from reseller).
 
and btw, i couldnt find quickboot option for the drive in bios :[

I don't think there is really any way to tell when it might quit. I would suggest backing up your data immediately though, and have a regular backup schedule after that.

I have a Teac DVD player that does the same thing. I took it apart and played with it a bit. When you first push play the DVD will jerk, but will not spin up. If you spin the disk with your hand a couple of times the motor will kick in. After that, the motor will keep going, but pause on occasion. Every time you push play after that it will work. It is still working now, so although I have another DVD player plus my Sexbox I will probably have it taken in to be repaired.
