Problem: Audio w/o sound card?

i recently installed a new cd/dvd drive. The sound card i have (ironically) also recently gave out. Here's the problem, i should be able to play an audio cd thru my cd drive by itself w/o a sound card, for some reason i am not able to do this. The drive is connected properly and is recognized by my OS, the headphones that are plugged into the drive work fine, and all the volume controls on the comp are turned up to max.

Any help would be very much appreciated, tks.
 
Do you have "digital audio" enabled for the drive?

Not exactly on topic, but the Chaintech AV-710 is 23.50 shipped from Newegg. That's about the cost of two pizzas.
 
After using that card for the last two days......I wouldnt give two pizzas for it. :)
But you are right. At that price it is worth trying.

Are you talking about the headphone output on the drive front? If so, Are you trying this with a DVD or a CD?
 
Standard audio cd, right? And you start the cd playing through software? Do you have the volume on the front of the cdrom drive turned up? Try turning the digital extraction off. With the digital extraction it is basically reading the bits off the disc like a data cd and doing the dac on the soundcard. Though I don't know exactly how that works so it may not matter either way.

Funny story that is actually somewhat relevant:
We had an old lady substitute In the IT academy(full of computer geeks) in high school one day. One of my buddies puts in some rap cd in his computer and plugs his headphones into the cdrom drive. He wasn't thinking so he turned up the speaker volume instead of the cdrom volume. He didn't think it was working so he kept turning the speakers up until they were all the way up. So we're in class in an elementary school(it was a new program so they stuck us there) with an old lady and he is sitting there blasting obscene, vulgar rap music, completely unaware of what is happening. Oh shit we all had a good laugh over it.
 
i am using a cd not a dvd and the volume is all the way up. The cd is standard audio, and i have tried playing it thru WinAmp and WMP. And where might i find this digital extraction option? or are you just referring to the option posted earlier in this thread?

Yes he's referring to the picture posted earlier in this thread. It should work, since you need the cd drive to do the DAC (digital to audio conversion), instead of the soundcard. With Digital Extraction on, it'll send the digital stream directly to your soundcard and not do any processing itself. Better quality for speakers, but useless if you wanna use that headphone jack..
 
hmmm, so if i am playing it thru the headphones plugged into the drive i should uncheck the box? and make it analog?
 
haha, Bravo Paragon, i must've asked 50 + ppl how to fix this problem and none knew exactly, though they did all help.

I believe the problem was in the setting in WMP, cuz i already had the drive itself enabled to play analog sound but WMP wasn't

Glad I could help. It has been a very long time since I ever attempted to listen to audio through the CDROM headphone output.. so I got curious.
