Ok I just got the 160 gigabyte maxtor 8mb cache....

I installed it and went into disk managament but it only reads as 32 gigs with no option to format. It only would let me make a partion of no greater than 32 gigs. I thought it was my BIOS so i updated/flashed em but that didnt change anything

The 2 hard drives are on the same IDE cable if it makes any difference.

Any ideas?? Could it be a faulty drive?

Um, so no body has any ideas what to do. Someone told me to put the 160 gig on ide3 and intsall the ide133 drivers.

But arent the first 2 ide's 133 as well???

What OS are you running?

If it is XP, then make sure that you have installed Service Pack 1. Or else it wont recognize that big of a hard drive.

if you have jumpers on the drive take them off. plug the drive on its own Channel

I have a similar problem but mine is an 80g drive that shows up as a 12 gig. The operating system doesn't even matter because this is coming from FDISK under fat32 not the OS.

I have not tried taking the jumpers off but will!
I have a friend that had a compaq or dell or something and called the manufacturer who told him the motherboard would not let him install it because the bios did not support it.

It sounds possible to me I guess...

Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

FAT32 (like old games and such)

You know, I've heard this but all my older games run just file on my ntfs hd's...
I've had problems with the speed of new systems (needed mo'slo to slow the program) and one old game (V for Victory) that I would have to disconnect my cd-rom to get to install from floppy (wierd...), but not one in my collection that didnt install due to the file system.

i have the same frustrating problem. i own a 160 gig maxtor and i reformat and now both the bios and winxp is reading 32 gig! i made a thread about this like 2 weeks ago. I still havent figure it out.

As viper11885 said, install XP, then get the Service Pack 1 update installed. Then go into Control panel/Administrative tools/Computer setup/Disk Management

and from there it will show the full amount of GB, and you can partition and format.

Do not use the drive setup program that comes with the drive. From my experience, they are all flawed and don't work correctly in XP, WD and Maxtor anyway.

I have already tried this method. It didn't work for me.
