I have a friend getting into digital pro photography (she already has done film for years). I have put together a reccommendation list. She won't be building her own machine since it would be good for her to have tech support. I can help her get started. This is what I put together.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR Kit with Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS USM AF Lens $3500
Extra memory cards and batteries

Gateway - Desktop FX6800-01e $1100

From Newegg:
HP LP2475w Black-Silver 24" 6 ms (GTG); 12ms HDMI Widescreen LCD Monitor - Retail $600
WD WD6400AAKS 640GB (Two, one for downloading images and one for backup, the computer has hotswap trays) $75 each
G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2GB) DDR3 1600 Memory F3-12800CL9T-6GBNQ $94
Logitech G5 7 Buttons 1 x Wheel USB Laser Mouse - Retail $50
XTRAC PADS Ripper Optical Mouse pad - Retail $14

X-Rite i1 Display 2 Monitor Color Correction with i1Match 3.6 Software - Retail $220
Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 - Retail $290
Adobe PhotoShop CS4 RES - Retail $700

Total $6650 + Tax

She'll want a Tablet and Wacom just released the Intuos 4 series.

She'll also want a RAMdisk program to make use of that 9GB of RAM. ;)

For Pro Photography,
If she has a Film Still camera, stay in that brand, as she will be able to continue to use the lenses she already has.

If Nikon, go with the D700, as it is an FX (24mm x 36mm) sensor and much smaller than other FX cameras.

Secondly, the monitor has a huge impact. Nice find with that IPS panel.

You can't be her tech support? ;)

Also, the camera is on backorder at B&H. If this is the same camera/kit, it's $2900 at Butterfly Photo.

MMMM, no on the tech support.. I will help out occasionally I am sure.

I think she should hold out for the 5D Mark II since it is such a highly anticipated release (I think it is the core 2 duo of cameras)

Agreed, she has canon lenses now.

Can't take credit for the monitor, posted for advice in the monitor section.. :)

Thanks all for your help!

I hope that the computer I picked works out ok.. It has been so long since I bought a pre-built machine (since my 2.26 P4 northwood hmm).

Go for a 30" monitor. The extra size makes a HUGE difference in reviewing and editing photos.

A pro photographer will also want hardware calibration, so that means Eizo Coloredge or NEC 3090WQXi. (Samsung has the XL30, which is nice, but its hardware calibration program won't work with Vista 64-bit. Which you should also get, to use more ram with Lightroom and Photoshop).
