I need a new printer. Im would like a good quality printer that I wont be throwing away in a year. I will mostly be printing school work(b&w) along with the occasional photo(lets say 8x10). Here is what Im looking for:

Network capability (IE plug the printer right into the network)
Cheap Black cartridges (im not to worried about the color)
Reliable printer(im tired of fixing paper jams and whatnot)

I haven't dealt with network printers, but my current setup was perfect for college.

First, I grabbed a fairly cheap HP inkjet for color and photo printing (832c). If you want very good photo quality, look into a dedicated photo printer. But if it's just occasional photos, and quality isn't worth a lot of extra money up front, you can get by with a cheap inkjet.

My workhorse is a Samsung ML-1710 laser printer. Obviously, any laser will be good for b&w, check your local ads for sales. Lasers really cut costs for your usual printing tasks, and it's so much faster than an inkjet. I had a 50 page report that I finished at 3 am, and since it had 2 pages of color (and I wasn't thinking at that hour) I sent it to my inkjet. In the meantime, I made a late dinner, ate, and showered. I came back after about 30 minutes and it was on page 11. So I cancelled that job, and since color wasn't important enough to miss sleep, I sent it to the laser. Less than 10 minutes later I was in bed. Lasers are worth it :)
