printer sucking in multiple pages

a family friend has a laserjet/fax combo (pretty old) and when it prints it sucks in 4-5 pages or so instead of the single page it should to print. How can i fix this besides standing next to the printer individually feeding pages in?
 
Have the person riffle the paper before loading it, and if that doesn't help, load the tray one sheet at a time. A lot of times, it's just because the paper's clinging to other sheets.
 
See if you can get replacement parts from HP. The paper feeding mechanisms on (at least) some models of their LaserJet printers wear out. Where I work, the 1100 model is the bane of the helpdesk. They are always having paper feeding issues... at one point, HP was giving out free kits to replace the affected parts, but I don't know if that is still in place/covers your model/etc. If it's still under warranty, you've got better odds. HP tech support is alledged to have gone to shit, due to outsourcing, so YMMV.
 
Also check the condition of the pick up rollers. I've seen dirty ones pick up multi pages. I've also seen one that was so well used it had dent from all the pages it has picked up. I just swapped the dended pickup to a spot that seemed to be in better condition.
 
another issue is if your friend is using REALLY CRAPPY cheap paper instead of good laserjet quality paper, it will have issues like you described.
 
More than likely it's the paper seperation pad if the printer uses a 5L/6L/1100 style loading mechanism.
