Printer/Scanner recommendations?

I've been using a Brother MFC-240C for the past 5 years or so. I hate this thing because despite printing PALE most of the time to save ink, this thing drinks it up like there's no tomorrow. Plus, it flat-out refuses to print if so much as 1 of the ink cartridges is empty. Even in B&W. Even if the black ink cartridge is full.

Brother has unleashed the most indirectly expensive printers on the market this way. I say indirectly because the printer itself is cheap. But they make more than their money back via the ink. I almost never print, but I had to buy new sets of cartridges 3 times this year, at $65 a pop.

Does anyone have another printer to recommend? Quality is important, as I am a graphic designer. And it needs to scan as well. Fax is not important. And ideally, it will still let me print if 1 ink cartridge runs out.
 
I like the Epson Workforce series of AIOs. I liked mine so much I bought one for my mother. $14 per color cartridge isn't bad either. $18 for black.
 
I heard one time that some printers would "lie" about the levels of ink in cartridges and tell you they needed to be replaced even if they were still at, say, 20%. Because of software monitoring how long the cartridge had been in use, or something.

I remember my response being "surely not!" but it's always been in the back of my mind, lol.

I need a new printer too though, so glad to see this thread. I like to have a scanner with mine, prefer a copier too. Also prefer that it doesn't have an overabundance of buttons and fancy touchscreens.

Checking out those Epsons you mention wra18th -- they look good and are reasonably priced, especially if the cartridges are that cheap. Any particular model? Or do they all take the same cartridges as far as you know?
 
Can anyone confirm that other companies (HP, Epson, Canon) let you print B&W even if one of the color ink cartridges is empty?
