I installed a new motherboard, and Asus A7V8X-X, and added Windows Xp Pro to my dad's pc. He has a HP Laserjet 1012 that worked under 98, but now when I install it on XP in the Device Manager Device Status window, I get this "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. (Code 38)". This is baffleing me, so I have to assume it is an easy fix. Anyone know what is wrong?
 
Well, all I can think of is to first go to the device manager and remove all instances of the device you can find. As soon as you do that, unplug/turn off the printer before windows can autodetect it again (XP seems to just randomly look every now and then.) Temporarily stopping the shell hardware detection service might help prevent it from detecting the thing before you are done. After this is done, reset just to be sure, then plug the printer back in and let windows try again. This sometimes works when something goes wrong with my printer. And believe me, that happens a lot. This is one screwed up printer (I had to take the back off and manually feed paper through one sheet at a time, that's how screwed up it is.) d-:
 
Did you try installing the HP drivers before you plugged the printer in? Sometimes you have to do that or else things get screwed up.
 
Check task manager and kill any processes that look like they may be related to HP.

Also, use Add/Remove Programs to remove whatever has already been installed for this printer.

Delete the printer out of the Printer window.

Delete the HP folder from your computer.

Disconnect the printer

reboot

Download the XP drivers for this thing and install those.

connect the printer.
 
That did not work either. I am starting to think it is the USB ports on this new motherboard. I have a Linksys USB Network adaptor hooked to it, that will not start when I boot the pc on. I have to unplug the USB then plug it up to get online.
 
I did a google and presto:

code 38 Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. (Code 38) The driver could not be loaded because a previous instance is still loaded.
Restart the computer.

On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooting wizard.

Not :confused:

Do try the device manager and see if there are any conflicts
download new drivers
go to the printers properties page (start,printers and faxes) and delete all printers
reinstall with new drivers
may be different with HP but with my Epson I have to install the drivers/software before connecting the printer
I'll keep looking
 
make sure usb2.0 support is "enabled" in teh bios. this gave me a big fuckin headache when that board would NOT work with my moms digi cam right. changing that setting from auto to enabled fixed it right up

There is not USB2 support in the bios. I went throught the whole thing.
 
Does the USB port work after the windows xp intallation? Mine didn't after an upgrade from 98SE to XP, so I had to go back to 98SE.

your right, i just checked it out, sorry... try to set usb legacy support to auto.. seems to be working for her.. do you have sp1? there was a usb hotfix in sp1
