OS: W7 Pro
Environment, office
Stations: 20
Access to network is primarily hard wired, some WAP

I have a Laser printer configured as a local printer to one of the PCs.
I would like to share that particular printer with several of the stations in the immediate area.
The printer is not networkable via ethernet, it is configured by USB.

Do I have to do this inside W7??

Right click on Printer on PC to which it is attached via USB and select Printer Properties then select the sharing tab.

It would be fairly easy from there to set up the sharing, then just search for the networked printer on the other 20 or so machines you want to share the printer to.

Hahahahaha.....you are very funny.

First of all, I have searched all of this out before I asked the question.

All of your helpful hints don't work, in other words I tried the things I know, already.

I guess I made the assumption that someone on this forum could help me find a solution
without being crude or sarcastic, but I was wrong.

I don't get the feeling he was being "crude" or "sarcastic". Your original question was answered correctly. What doesn't work about the solution provided. I would suggest that you be more descriptive, and forthcoming with details. Giving a vague and limited descriptions will get you vague and limited solutions.

Are you machines part of a domain or workgroup? If they are part of a workgroup, have you given the appropriate permissions, like everyone can print? do you have DNS setup some where?

Sometimes seeing as you only have 20 machines, it is easier to set fixed IP addresses and then enter the hostnames in the hosts file. then you can add the printer via \\PRINTSERVERNAME\Printer once it has been shared out. You also have to make sure that you have the appropriate driver for each client installed on the printserver computer.. Hope this helps

Showing an image pointing to Google is pretty lame in my book.
I can and would provide additional information if asked.

He gave you a legitimate solution.
Sure.

I have applied permission to the clients and the machine that has the printer attached via USB.
The entire network is utilized to run a specific software (record keeping software) and inside that program all the clients may print through that software.
However when outside that proprietary software working in windows it is not the case......I will have to go back and make sure the drivers are installed on the PCs I wish to print from.....that might be my mistake.

If this is a 'fire' type of situation and you need it working right now I would try switching 'Password protected sharing'

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/185429-password-protected-sharing-turn-off-windows-7-a.html

on the computer which you have acting as the 'server'. To off. That way you know if it's a permissions issue. Clients who have proper accounts will still be capable of reaching their usual shares.

I'm assuming it's already shared and it's exported (visible).

As for the installation itself, there are better ways, but I have to deal with some old unsupported host-based printers... so I'll show that.

Install the printer drivers on a client from the disc or from the vendor's site. As it was an existing local printer. I do hope it won't require you to run around with the printer from station to station :) usually it doesn't with mine.

Then, go to the printer's properties (client-side), and find the 'ports' tab.
Instead of the default, create a new 'port'
it's explained well here:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/kb...ps/Admin/AddSharedPrinterasaLocalPrinter.html
(see step 5 of the Windows 7 section)
Personally I use the \\<ip>\<sharename> approach. For small networks anyway.

You should be able to install the drivers on the print server computer for all versions.

On the sharing tab of the printer properties there is an additional drivers button. put the drivers for each type of client machine you have there.

Thanks for the very helpful additional info.

Going to tackle this Monday.

Thanks alot!!!
