priming a water pump?

ok so i'm slowly piecing together a nice watercooling system. flame me for it or not, i got a swiftech MCP655 off ebay. so right now i just want to test it. i tried it last night using a bucket and two lengths of tubing. it dawned on me that this is not a good way to test the pump as it seems near impossible to properly prime it. i have no other components by the way.

so my plan for tonight - back to home depot, but a T fitting and stick some tubing on it. run the thing in a loop and using the T for bleeding off the air and adding more water as needed.

i also noticed that the pump was quite loud, although did not sound abnormal. i read somewhere about how they are until they're properly primed and running with no air.

so any thoughts? any better methods to test this sucker?

You can prime it with just a bucket of water and two tubes, but you need to be sure you don't get any air running through it. The problem is mostly that it's difficult to get the initial water into the tube with a bucket/bowl versus reservoir. However.....this fellow may help you.

If you had your res it would be easy because you could run tube to the pump, pump to the bowl, bowl to the res and then just fill it.

Hang on to the tubes....heh. Btw, great pump. I have one myself and run it at full speed, whisper quiet.
 
take one piece of tube about 3-5feet long, put it on the intake of the pump, put the other end in the bucket of water. take another little longer piece 5-10 feet, and put that on the 'out' side of the pump and start suckin, when the water is almost up to your mouth quickly put the end of the hose in the bucket, keep both ends submerged and you wont have a problem. run it for 30 seconds and its primed, it should be as loud as an average case fan.
 
thanks for the help. tried it last night, but looks like i got screwed on ebay. this pump is powerful enough, but it rattles like nothing else and has a great vibration to it. only way i can eliminatie it is to run it on lowest setting. piece of crap.
 
Shouldn't be doing that. Was it used?

The MCP655 is very, very quiet once you've fastening it down with the sticky pads they provide or velcro. I don't even hear mine, but if I touch it there is nothing more than a gentle hum to it.

no you're right it shouldn't be. it was used, but according to the seller it was used for 4-5 months which is why i jumped on it. the jerkoff is determined to rip me off and keeps saying that it was sold 'as is'.

sure thats nice, but that doesn't mean that you can sell someone something that is almost completely busted, not tell them about it and expect to get away with it. currently started a dispute with ebay, see how far it goes. if nowhere i may try to repair it. any guides on something like this?

If he didn't know what he was doing and ran air through it he could have messed up the bearings.

The bottom line is that if he didn't disclose that during the sale (i.e. damaged pump) and the pump is defective (certainly isn't working the way it's supposed to be) then it's fraud. I'd report him to e-bay and see if you can get your money back.
 
already done and awaiting the response. the dolt just keeps saying that its "as is" and that aparently it worked before....yeah right these things dont die mysterious deaths. so because it says as is he doesnt have to do jack. yup id say thats getting pretty close to fraud.
 
check and see if the rotor is damaged, twist off the input (the knurled round front) and see if the rotor is intact.
 
i did, the rotor is fine and the motor seems to be, but it is off center slightly so its got a wobble when it runs. yay!
