Prime95 Question

Hello everybody

I know alot of people use Prime95 to test if their computer is stable or not. But which test should I run? There is 4 of them

1. Small FFTs (max FPU stress, data fits in L2 cashe, RAM not tested much)

2. In-place large FFTs (max heat, power comsumption, some ram tested)

3. Blend (tests some of everything, lots of RAM tested)

4. Custom

Which one do I select for normal testing if it is stable or not.

If I want HARDCORE, MASSIVE STRESS TEST How should I customize it?

Thank You

i usually just select blend, turn all my fans to high and walk off and sleep on the couch that nite =b if it can get thru 8+hrs of Prime95 then its more than likely gonna run as long as u want it to in other situations.

I agree with setting to blend and taking a hike - but I'd go for more time. A P4 system I'm trying to iron the wrinkles out of didn't fail the blend test until 8 hours 31 minutes the other afternoon. Since this is going to be the HTPC that holds all my media files I wanna be sure it's solid - so I won't settle until it can do 24 hours - no errors. So close, and yet so far...

You're probably sitting there, wondering why I am so concerned with the failure when it took that long to show itself. For starters when I rebooted the machine after the test my drive was so corrupted it wouldn't boot windows. When a machine will corrupt prime95 data, it will have no qualms about serving your MBR up scrambled w/ cheese for the lunch special...

Very good point, I think this is one thing that most people overlook when they are satisfied with 1hr Prime stable.

Once I'm finished the OC on my new machine, I'm going to prime it for 48-76 hours.

I have no reason not to. I'll still have my old machine to run beside it.

haha angrybusdriver, my roommate drives a bus route on campus. I'm getting the mental image - I love it.

Thanks for the backup on the importance of prime to everyone, not just dist|comp users
