Prime95 Failing Without Overclocking

Well, as the thread title says, I constantly get an error in SP2004 and Prime95. They tend to run between 45 minutes to 2 hours, and then I get something like "Self-test 896K passed!
FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.5, expected less than 0.4
Hardware failure detected, consult stress.txt file." Is this normal for an E6600 that isn't overclocked at all? It's running around 32C, but I can't get the motherboard to run cooler than 45C or so. is this likely a problem with the CPU, RAM, or mobo? I don't know how long the warranties will last, and I'd like to overclock, but if I'm getting errors without OCing I'm kind of worried. The system itself "seems" stable, though it did randomly reboot twice, and I have no clue why. Anyone have advice on any other tests I can run to narrow down problems, or anything to look for? Thanks

My money's on incorrectly detected RAM SPD in bios. Probably has your ram at at something lower than 5-5-5-12

Shouldn't be a problem if he is running at stock speed. That RAM can do 4-4-4-12 at conroe's stock speed.

This worries me considering I have the same exact hardware coming on next Wednesday. Did you get the XMS2 that's rated at 4-4-4-12 @ 800?

Nevertheless, it's worth checking out. Might do 4-4-4-12 at 2T, but maybe not 1T? There's other things to check out in the Bios as well. I've seen mobos pick totally inappropriate FSB:RAM ratios. My Asrock board picked a 1:2 ratio for straight DDR memory out of the box with the shipping bios. Had my ddr at 532 when it's rated for 500.

Might also check to be sure northbridge cooling solution is attached correctly. Is the hs getting warm when you run prime95?
Are you running two instances of prime95, one on each core? do you get the error for one core or the other all the time? or is it random?

I had a similar error problem in Prime 95. After I overclocked too far and had my first error, adjusting voltage and speed didn't help and even backing off the OC things seemed to error more than they use to.

So I just put it back at stock, this is an e6400 on a DS3, and I still got an error within 5 minutes in Prime 95. I restarted it a couple times and didn't help.

I finally shutdown the system, turned the PSU off, removed the power cable on the back, let it sit for a while and hit the power button and restart button many times just to be sure all power was out of it.

After I did that and started up I was suddently able to do 8hrs straight at stock settings where before it was doing errors in minutes (mind you that was after the first error in an overclock). So for me, it seemed like once I messed up with an overclock, nothing was stable even at stock until I got rid of all the power, but I didn't do anything to clear the bios.

Don't know what caused my problem, but just wondering if he tried getting rid of all power from the system for a while before testing again.

How do I adjust RAM timings and such in the BIOS? I intended this to be my first overclock, so I'm not sure where to find them. I found FSB and such, and where I can select DDR2 800 or whatnot, but not actual timings or anything like that. This is a P5W-DH Deluxe, as I mentioned before.

I'm running a Memtest now, 70% through and it's fine so far- all I did before it was change RAM settings from Auto to DDR2 800. I'll try the power thing in a bit.

Edit: Also, I ran SP2004 on the CPU intensive setting instead of the blend CPU/RAM, and it lasted 3 hours and had no errors when I decided to stop it. I assume this points toward a RAM/Motherboard issue?

Give us your entire system spec so that we can have a better picture of where to look for a potential issue.

What type of PSU are you using, BTW?

Antec TruePower 2.0 550 watts
P5W-DH Deluxe Motherboard
Core 2 Duo E6600
Artic Freezer 7 Pro Heatsink
Antec P180 Case
Western Digital WD3200KS 320GB SATA II
Evga 256MB 7900GT
Corsair XMSorsair XMS2 2GB DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)

That looks like everything of importance. The only other notable thing I can think of is the fact that from the minor tests I ran, the SATA II seems to only write at 1.5 and not 3.0, which is what I thought SATA II wrote at. Might be wrong. Also, the RAM was auto-detecting as 5300 and not 6400- would that be the issue? I corrected it and I'm now running Prime95 again. I ran Memtest just one time through with no errors, which I'm sure isn't conclusive at all, but I figured that given it was being detected wrong, I might as well see if that was the issue.

Under Advanced---------->Chipset

Well I got to 2 hours and 11 minutes this time, which is about my past record when I left it on last night. I guess that isn't too bad considering I was doing some other taxing things while running it, but that's certainly not results I'm looking for. I'll check the timings out and report back. I'm not entirely sure it stopped at the same spot, so if I do it again and it stops at 2 hours and 11 minutes, I should probably assume it's some program error and try SP2004 again.

Edit: Checked my timings. They were 6-4-4-15 or something along those lines. I changed them to 5-5-5-12, which is what the RAM is listed at. I'll see how Prime95 tests, now.

Keep us updated. Because I'm recieving the exact same mobo and ram next week. :D

Temps? not that this is the same thing, but I would get errors with my P4 with the stock HSF. So what are your temps running at? That would be my first concern. Are you running 2 instances of Prime? Also don't do anything else, let the computer just work the two instances of prime.

Just some thoughts,

Sunin

I had the same problem. It was my RAM. The MB supplied 1.8V and the RAM is spec'd at 2.1V. I manually raised the RAM voltage and set the timings in the BIOS and haven't had a problem since - stock or OC'd.

Now I know your ram is 1.9V, but it wouldn't hurt to check it out. Just a thought.
