Prime stable, sure, but UT2k4 stable?

I've tested the OC below with Prime, Memtest and Pi calculations and it has been as solid as a rock for all tests and games I could throw at it. However, I reinstalled UT2k4 and the game will always lock up within ~30 minutes of playing. Sometimes it is within 5 minutes. I am now leaving the video card at stock speeds to verify it isn't a problem with the vid card. What is it about this game that brings my system to its knees?

Nope.

Playing the game increases the temperature of your GPU. That extra heat eventually ends up within the CPU's heatsink, while the CPU is also under stress. Chances are, its a temperature issue. Open up the side of the case and see if it helps.

Idunno, I generally have problems with UT2K4 not being stable at all, and this has been over two different hardware configurations, completely different.

I still play it, but I'm aware I'll probably lock up or BSOD in the process, while I'm Prime-Stable as well as rthdribl stable for hours, and CS:S stable for hours, Warcraft 3 TFT stable for hours, etc.

Yea, I'm pretty sure it's not a driver issue or temp issue. I say this because I tested everything back at stock and it ran a while just fine. I was also able to run for a while at 2.6ghz /w 1.4v. However, bumping it up to 2.7ghz which is Prime stable overnight causes the machine to lock up within minutes of starting a game. I haven't tried bumping up the voltage on 2.7 ver far (just to 1.45) but again, it is Prime stable at 1.4.

CS:S runs for hours and hours just fine, so does Doom 3. It's starting to look like in order to play this game, I can't go over 2.6ghz. I just thought it was weird that UT2k4 was so sensitive to overlocks. Oh well...

UT series has been infamous for not liking massive overclocks.

Its been that way since 1999. The game is VERY cpu dependent.

UT is all I play and I haven't had a problem with it at all. I play at 275x9 on my Monster Rig so I don't worry about coooling at all. I've found that UT will crash a system by over stressing the system ram more than anything else.

In my opinion, prime stable does not necessarily mean your rig is stable and vice versa... it can be used as an indicator but nothing more and nothing more concrete.

It's perfectly normal for people to have prime stable setups and then for them to have BSOD and unstability in windows apps. and then some people can't for the life of them get prime stable, but have never had an unstability problem in windows.

If UT won't run above 2.6GHz, then your system seems like it's not 100% stable at that speed.
Try clocking it back or upping voltages.

I had the same problem with UT2004. Just lockup when I had a huge oc. Just got to find a nice oc that your happy with and that UT is happy with too. I dont play ut2004 that much anymore mostly cs:s so best of luck! :D

i always used ut2004 to test my ocs for gaming, if its stable in ut2004 its stable in everything else, but not neccesarily the other way around, i could oc my vid cards core to 450 and it takes about a hour of whatever to crash in other stuff but in ut2k4 it takes about 10-30 minutes max, in playing with it i found that dropping core a little to get higher memory clock got better performance and stability

cs:s and doom 3 i think is too cpu dependant to stress the vid card?
farcry is best for testing memory it seems

UT doesn't stress ram, lol.

It can be played with 256 megs. UT2003 & 2004 don't even require over 512 megs to run smoothly.

Your 275 x 9 isn't 1:1 with your ram either....

but hte thing is, are you prime stable for over 24 hours? and yea its not a sure fire indicator of stability cuz i agree with what j-pep said and have experience with that. i gotta tell you tho, UT does cause crashes and tho i dont know if you have a venice chip or not.... you might be a lil low on the voltages for a 2.8ghz speed. just check the voltages, and also make sure you dropped the htt multi to 3x if you havent already.
