Thats the 1 million $ question, I won't mind getting one to replace my socket a but I'd really like to know how they OC first
 
I thought Duron sounded lame-ass and a half, but AMD just obliterated the lamest name record.

I have to agree, and I'm sure most people hate the name as well. It's right up there with Efficeon. Sometimes I don't understand big corporations.

Opteron and Barton are the only cool names AMD came up with. Opteron would have been better, though, if it was Opertron instead. You switch the t and the er. Sledgehammer also has a fun ring to it. Other than those, all other AMD names and codenames are ranging from lame to trible uber lameass pro and a half extreme lameness.

I am gonna copy my post from another thread to here, it should clear some things up. This is in regard to the Socket A version only.


It is a T-Bred and nothing else. This is no different from AMD taking a T-Bred and changing the label to Duron and updating the microcode with a new name. Well I guess it is different since my Durons have a reduced amount of cache, but you get the idea.

This is strictly a marketing ploy. Take current Athlon XP T-Bred design and change name, therefor the Athlon name can stay with the higher class CPUs just as t10 said above.

Just to clarify even though this has been said before in the thread, although maybe not this clearly.

Socket A Sempron = Athlon XP T-Bred
SAME DAMN CPU!

We all understand this and are in accordance here???

Now what I do not know is the bus speed it will run at. I would only guess 333MHz or maybe 400MHz. That is about the last question out there for the Socket A Semprons, but we can make educated speculation. Take a Thoroughbred Athlon XP 2700+, it runs at 2.16GHz at a 333MHz bus speed (13 x 166). If the highest clocked Sempron has a model number of 2800+ and since we know it will not have a larger amount of L2 cache to increase the model number rating, we can surmise that the Sempron 2800+ may be a 2.25Ghz part with a 333MHz bus (13.5 x 166), its the next logical step up in clock speed. Make since, kinda?
Of couse if it uses a 400MHz bus, it could easily be something like 10.5 x 200 for a 2.1GHz chip part. I can see this being named a 2800+ based on AMD's past history of bus speed and cache sizes to base model numbers on. Slightly slower than what a 2700+ is, but because of the increased bus speed, it benchmarks faster so it gets a faster model number.

Now the Socket 754 and Socket 939 Semprons, those get easier. Take current K8 cores that have not passed QC due to bad cache or what not. Disable ether half or three quarters of the cache depending on what the original has (512KB or 1MB) along with technology like NX and AMD64. Now you got a perfect value chip that was heading for the dumpster because it could not pass QC for what it was built for. I would expect them to have SSE2, and here is why. This is all about sales and marketing. You have not and will never see AMD market the K8 core as including Intel SSE 2, same with the K7 core and SSE. It has no selling point so its not talked about. Well we know how much AMD64 has been marketed, and expect NX to be marketed just as much as soon as Windows XP SP2 is released. In the world of sales and marketing these are called upsales items. Take your average home PC consumer (This is not us!). They purchase a machine to last anywhere from three to five years right. A consumer might think, "I don't need 64-bit because there is no software to support it right now". But its the salespersons job to explain yes they do need it because of NX and Longhorn. Longhorn will be available with in the life expectancy's of this machine so why not future proof it right now by spending a few extra bucks up front and getting an Athlon64 over purchasing a new machine come 2006. SSE2 is not something you can upsale on, so there is no reason not to disable it plain and simple.

Heck we don't even know if these chips are marketed for the US market. The Applebred Duron was produced for emerging markets like China. Sure we may be able to buy it, same as the Applebred, but was it made for us? Right now no one knows.
