the cards were supposed to be released at the 250-300 price point when they came out, but due to the demand they have been bumped up a bit. When can i expect them to fall in line to the prices that they were supposed to be at? Early January or February?

I really don't think anyone can answer that question any better than you can. Fact of the matter is that even at the slight markup they're seeing today, they can't keep them on the shelves. Until that changes or until there is some competition, there's no reason why retailers will lower prices back down to MSRP.

It wasn't demand so much as lack of supply, thanks to issues with TSMC's 40nm process(likely a reason why AMD is fleeing to Globalfoundries for the 6000 series). However high demand coupled with that low supply has meant that we've been seeing elevated prices for all 5800 series cards for the past few months. However, prices are already starting to come down, Newegg and Amazon both have 5850s at under the $300 mark, which is encouraging imo. Expect prices to slowly come down until the release of Fermi, or well into the next year whichever comes first.

Lack of any competing cards from Nvidia let AMD jack the prices as well.

Well it doesn't help that Nvidia decided to pull a reverse AMD strategy with it's video cards and jack them up 50-60 dollars in most cases in response. That meant that even after the price increases for 5850s and 70s, Nvidia's cards were still uncompetitive, and actually even more uncompetitive since the 4890s didn't go up in price nearly the same degree, which suddenly made every GT200 video card uncompetitive with either the current or last generation of AMD cards.

Cards went down on newegg by 10 dollars for the 5850. Lets see if it continues the same trend of the coming weeks.

I bought the ASUS 5870 HD for $CAN 420 + $10 (shipping) + GST - ($50 cash back from Paypal) = $CAN 400. And I also got Dirt 2. Happy camper here!
The 5870 stock seems to be fine so I expect some interesting price decreases in the coming weeks (if you do not mind mail-in-rebates).

How did you get $50 cashback from Paypal?
