Retailers started to drop Intel consumer chip prices after the Ryzen announcement.

Just my personal opinion, the Intel chips are still a tad expensive. Will wait and see...

Xeon server price cut next after Naples released?
 
Seems to only be MicroCenter so far, at least from the links provided by WCCF and a quick check with other online retailers.

edit: lololol I saw they have an i5 4690k for $189 USD, so for shits and giggles, as I live in Canada, I checked the newegg.ca website for that same processor, expecting it to be around $400 or so, which seems to be a reasonable markup for us northern suckers..

Microcenter always has price cuts on their processors - e.g. the 7600k is only $20 cheaper now than it was beginning of the month ($219.99 on their Jan 31st ad), and the 6800k is $40 cheaper. They dropped on Feb16th to their current prices. That said, hopefully they start dropping some more...

Yep. This is nothing new. Microcenter has been doing this every year for almost 10 years now. It all corresponds with tax season hoping people will spend their tax returns there. They will have these crazy price cuts up until June when most people should have received their returns. This summer time frame also corresponds with Intel launching new CPU architecture (usually the low end first) and also helps them clear excess stock. They use the CPU and motherboard combos as loss leaders to get people in the door, and they don't just do it with Intel. They then leave the MSRP stickers on everything else and mark it for sale too to trick people into thinking they are getting huge bargains on a full system build.

The reality is every other component is about $5-10 more than what you can get online. By the time they suckered you in to buying the CPU and motherboard, you start getting the itch to do a full system build...and that's how they make up the money lost on the CPU's. Don't let that deter you. The result is still a net gain for your average enthusiast and MicroCenter both. You will have spent the same amount you would have with NewEgg or Amazon, but you have the items that day instead of waiting on that "Free" shipping.

You may think I'm making this up, but I've witnessed it first hand with several system builds in that same time frame: a Phenom system in 2009, My Fiance's old Thuban system in 2011, my Sandy Bridge system in 2012, a new video card and SSD in 2014, and my Fiance's new Skylake build in 2016. They can be found in my sig and the older one's have been repurposed into a NAS and HTPC.


If you see the likes of Amazon and Newegg follow suit, then something's up. Until then, it's just Microcenter business as usual and has nothing to do with Ryzen release.

Microcenter is hardly a litmus test here, this seriously happens all the time. In Store Only pricing. It is why there is a lot of rage that people do not live close enough to a microcenter to take advantage of their [H]otdeals.
 
I still cry myself to sleep sometimes after the Santa Clara MC closed shop. The only thing I managed to buy there was the samsung wonder ram and a 2500k.

Don't get your hopes up. Many others here have already said otherwise. You might want to read my post above yours explaining it in full detail. Many of us have first hand experience with Microcenter and their insane sales.

If big online retailers like Newegg and Amazon follow suit, then there might be something going on. Until then, it's simply Microcenter's yearly tax season clearance sales.

I saw this exact story in 3 separate places on Reddit from both WCCF and OC3D, along with several memes on PCMR.
 
Until 6900k drops to $500 then it's not an Intel price cut. Ryzen 1700/1800x is pwning Intel on price with better performance and Intel needs to cut their 6 core and 8 core prices in half!

The prices have changed at Microcenter, and I know because I live near two stores, and I get the daily emails which I can search for info.
From my emails:

i7-7700k
Jan 5th - $329 (intro price)
feb 17th - $299 (first drop I saw in emails)
Now - $299

i5-7600k
Jan 5th - $229 (intro price)
Feb 14th - $219 (first drop I saw)
Feb 17th - $199 (second drop)
Now - $199

So each one has dropped $30 total by Feb 17th. These sites that have been reporting on Microcenter price drops are a bit late on reporting this.

Skylake prices have dropped a lot, but that makes sense because it's an older generation, plus Intel just said Optane needs Kaby Lake. It's not extremely unusual for Microcenter to drop prices on older generation cpus to clear them out. If they don't drop the price nobody will buy them.

I expect Intel to market that the i7 6800K 6C /12T matches up against the 1800X. They will cherry pick benchmarks that show exactly that and include it in their marketing material.

Never paid more than $230 for any CPU in my life. I do not intend to pay more in the future.:) However I want AMD to succeed so we finally have a choice.:)

That would be the third-party doing the price gouging then. I see it too often on the U.S. version of NewEgg and Amazon. In those cases, I usually wait until NewEgg/Amazon themselves restock and watch the price again.

MC is first of all cutting chains in the logistics. They are pretty much getting distributor/OEM prices for CPUs unlike Newegg, Amazon and who else. Next is as mentioned, MC sells so cheap to get people into the store. And it works for them. That's their way of fighting against webshops.
 
Micro center has always had CPUs for cheaper than anywhere else, so they should not be used for noting price drops. Aside from that, it makes sense for Intel to drop prices overall since they are going from near zero competition to a modern competitor.

While a lot remains to be seen in real world testing it at least shows that Intel is concerned over what AMD is putting out which is a great sign and hopefully AMD can deliver and keep the momentum going.

Interesting. Price slashes on last gen only. This still smells of bullshit hype train. People want it to be real so badly they are fabricating stories to fit their idea of events.

It will be interesting to see if this hype actually leads to the other big retailers slashing prices on the current gen too. Whether it be due to hype or simply because of capitalistic need to outdo their competitor. I also am willing to bet Intel and AMD keep their mouth's shut and let the enthusiasts and media run their mouths as it will lead to increased sales for both of them.

In June 2016 you could get 6700K for 290$ for example. But people forget Microcenter prices is store only.

I honestly hope they are right and Intel comes out and cuts big time into prices, it helps everyone....But what keeps getting posted over and over again are people who don't understand that is not what is happening right now and this is just normal MC pricing/sales.

However, even if other retailers cut prices, it still means nothing until Intel actually cuts prices.
