Current setup:

A64 3000+ @ 2.2
DFI Ultra-D
2 gigs of G.Skill
Thermaltake 480W PSU
X800XL

I'm already going to be upgrading the PSU to this (or something similar), so power shouldn't be a problem. My question to you is: Should I just bite the bullet, spend $300 and get an X1800XT and/or 7900GT, or would an X850XT for $160 be a better price/performance jump? TIA! :)
 
i think i saw some 600 psus on newegg for $60, different brand tho. i think that getting a new mid-range end card is a good idea and its not worth upgrading to a 850 from a 800. and even with direct x 10 cards comming out, it doesn't mean that you'll need one to play new games at good settings. get a high end card now and you'll be good for 16-20 months.
 
Really? It seems like I'd need a better PSU for a card like that, but I suppose the 7900 series uses less power than the previous series' cards.

no anything around 350-400 watts is plenty for a basic setup. now multiple drives and sli would change your psu requirements big time. any quality 350-400 watt psu with good 12v ratings can handle a 7900gt. of course some motherboards have their own requirements. i think most dfi boards recommend 450 watts or something close to that.

7800 gt for 230 dollars on For sale forums is the best
 
Definetly switch up to the nextgen cards (i.e. not that 850), be it the x1XXX series or 7XXX series. You'll get the benefit of not only FAR better performance, but lovely SM3.0 as well.

If you don't want to take a huge hit to your pocket book, as was suggested earlier, grab a used 7800GT.

Also, don't worry about your PSU as long as the voltages are stable. In fact, save the dosh and grab the 7900 series or X1900 series :D
