OK, so I want a new video card. I am currently using a C3D 9600 128mb card, and let me just say that it BLOWS.

I have a rather kick ass system (atleast for what I need)-
p4 3.0 @ (currently stable) 3.6ghz
1gig (512x2) DDR550 PC4400
Abit IC7 MAX3

The thing is I'm still rather poor ever since I baught this system. While running games like D3, my VC struggles immensely. It's the only thing keeping me back at the moment from having a lag-free game.

I'm really liking the 6800 series vc's, but is there anything else that's comparable for less than $300? I need something that will be quite good, but I don't need the BEST OF THE BEST OF THE NEWEST stuff.. Know what I mean?

Can anyone recommend any cards?

EDIT:
Also, I'm still using the psu from my x-dreamer II case, which is a generic 350w.. Would that be sufficient or should I upgrade?

Price vs Performance, you can't beat the 6800GT. Just wait a month and you will be able to get them at MSRP instead of being gouged. I was lucky and went the eVGA royte early and I am very happy with it. It's performance is like 10% less than the Ultra and it absolutely owns the x800pro.
BTW, I would bump up the PS also. Mine is in my sig, but the guy who posts on the PS thread is truly knowledgeable. He'll probably suggest an Antec, given your price concerns.

I'm looking to spend $300, but less if I can..

What will msrp be on those 6800's ?

Well the 6800 non ultra is $300. GT is $400. eVGA has a step up program, so if you get the non ultra, a few months later you can upgrade, plus the difference in price.

For ~$300 the normal 6800 128MB cards are your best bet. ($280 ish on newegg)

ATi currently doesn't have a real contender in this price range. They need to lower the price on their pro's down to ~$325 ish and everyone would be reccomending that. But for $400 the 6800GT is faster and for $300 the 6800 is the best.

Is there really that much difference in the 6800 non-ultra and the ultra? I mean, I know it has higher numbers and all that good stuff on paper, but if the extent of my use of the card is demanding games like d3, will the non-ultra suffice?

Also, with the step-up program, do I get full credit for what I paid for the first card then pay the difference, or is the difference less or more or what?

What does that mean to me? lol..

The 6800nu will be much faster then a 9800 pro or 5900 Ultra so it would be your best buy. They overclock real well and the 6800nu performs about as well as the ATI X800XT PE in DOOM 3.

You can grab a 6800nu for $300 or under. I posted a link to the XFX model which is dual dvi for $267 AR so you might check that out in the Hot Deals section to see if its still active.
