Sweet!!!! Hopefully with the new chipsets they can make some good MATX boards so I can buy one!!!
 
probably true, but not that big a deal...

the processors will have been out on the market for about 3 quarters by then, and the K8Ls will be around the corner also....

it would be bigger news if they werent cut.... since its pretty rare that you see a processor family out for almost a year without a single price cut
 
Expected as the Pentium E2xxx and Celeron 4xx line ain't showing up till the Q3 2007. Very impressive price cuts come Q2 2007, these should keep Intel quite well in the running against the K8L/K10 Derivatives.

this will go over really well with me if Intel starts producing motherboards around this time that it promises will work with the (by then) imminent 45nm processors. That way guys like me, who like to make mega jumps between generations (my main "rig" is a lowly Dothan laptop), can purchase one of the cheaper C2Ds and then down the line pick up a 45nm on the cheap with the same MB....

I don't see why the Bearlake family shouldn't have any problems supporting the 45nm processors, as the Bearlake chipsets should support 1.33GHZ FSB.

I am not sure, last time I read the first revisions of Bearlake are coming around this time, while a second revision is slated for Q3 2007.

He did say motherboard support, not chipset support. Look at what happened with earlier 975x boards that lacked Conroe support. I think this is what he (and I) would like to avoid.

EDIT: Wow, these are some drops. It puts the E6600 at the price of today's E6400, which I note is more or less being replaced by a 4MB model. Looks like Intel thinks 2MB of cache isn't enough. We should be seeing mid-range DX10 parts by that time as well. This will be the perfect time to build a my new system.

I don't know what Intel could do this time around that would make 45nm vesions incompatible, if the FSB supports then it should be most likely a drop in replacement. a 6MB Cache Conroe, is still a Single Die Monolithic processor.

I could understand New Architecture and the requirement of new motherboard. But not an optical shrink with a little more cache on the same architecture.

since the e4300 and e4400 have 800mhz fsb, will they start making those for socket 478 to show us poor people some love??? please in the name of all that is holy say yes. i need a new cpu badly. my p4 2.6 hasn't exactly aged well.

NO!

Yes, there are i865 chipset boards with C2D support so we know it can work. The problem is, on those same i865 boards Intel limited them to Socket 775 :mad: I'm not sure if C2D would work on 478. Yes, I still have a 2.6C on an IC7 Max that I'd love to replace with a Socket 478 C2D:) DDR1 and AGP and all.

You never know what kind of voltage issues could arise on motherboards. It'll be a motherboard issue, not a chipset issue, IF such an issue occurs.

I agree that it's unlikely but it must be recognized as a possiblity for those of us who do not upgrade our motherboards every 6 months.

I doubt it, Intel wants you to upgrade to a new platform with mobo, CPU and memory. They make more money that way.

I have never seen an optical shrink with more cache by Intel not work in Intel motherboards that supported the prior older process versions, as long as the Socket is right and the FSB is supported.

Anyway it doesn't really matter if it was a motherboard or chipset issue, there really isn't sufficient grounds for an optical shrink with more cache to not work in the motherboards or chipsets out now as long as they have the proper FSB support.

If it's a possibility it is very remote.

If it's a new architecture, like Conroe was over NetBurst, then some issue will likely arise to make it incompatible with the older motherbaords, even if the Socket is the same, it would be very surprising if it was flawless.

I understand it is unlikely, I am just always concerned about these things. Your confidence in this matter pleases me as I wish to purchase something like an E4300, OC it, and drop in a 45nm quad core a year or two later.
 
Thanks for the heads up. Bad news I was just going to order a 6300. Now it looks like a wait for a 6320. Good news is "What a deal".

I can gurantee a Dual Core 45nm should work where the Dual Core 65nm worked for Core assuming same FSB and socket. But I can't gurantee that the 45nm Quad Core will work. It will depend what configuration Yorkfield comes in. If it's a native Quad Core like some rumors are pointing to, there is a chance that it won't work. If It's still a MCM Quad Core like Kentsfield, it should work assuming the Socket and FSB are supported by the motherboard.

This is my plan,grab a E4300 and get 3.3+Ghz out of it.And with its high multi,expensive ram will not be needed,any plain jane DDR2 800 will do. :D
