Don't buy this game, it has no depth.

Story, dialogues

Its just another Doom 3/Quake 4 type of game, a little talk and a few unintelligent sentences and then you are in an alien and gross environment shooting. I'd love more technical mojo and good sentences.

Play System Shock 2 for good technical mojo (even for todays standards) and good voice-acting and intelligent dialogue and a very scary story that holds back and get better as you progress in the game.

Displaing the main character and having him speak can make you forget you are in the game.

Gameplay

and complex missions, or more strategic action like Half Life 2s physics: blow up a bridge and they fall down. Where is the concept of arena, then explore, then puzzle? Here its no arena just indoor architecture and corridors with random placed encounters.

"Walking-in-the-roof" and box-portals are very WOW at first but then not very depthy.

Weapons

The weapons are tame and not very interesting, their sound effects are plush and not as instant as i.e Quake 3 or Half Life 2 machine gun. With those we get more solid feeling.

Would be nice if the weapons had a story and explanation or he had to "learn" how to use them? A little more depth that is.

Monsters

The monsters are very fake when they get hit and die, and if you continue shoot them they won't blow up/dismember. When they are frozen they won't shatter. One should be able to shoot the brain-in-belly zomebies in the belly and it would shatter and you could give it critical hits there. It would add depth and gameplay, which is the most important factors in a fun game.

It's almost as bad as the monsters in Unreal 2.

If I want brainless and fun action let me have Doom 1&2, there we have huge arenas, lots of monsters, satesfying hits (pronounced and solid blood splatter, made possible because of the low resolution), satesfying death animations and weapons with personality and good sound FX. Quake 3 Arena also has good weapons and gameplay and the arcade feeling.

Just to rub it in I quote John Carmack: "I'd love to have 100 texture operations per pixel in a single clock." Weee that means tons of fancy texture effects and no focus on polygons and gameplay. Someone give John Carmack the bird.

IF you disagree with this information please explain what you like with the game and share your insight.

I REALLY LIKED THE demo

But once i found out how short it actually is...i didn't bother...not even with download..

ok this is complete bs.

PREY is an awesome game.

changing gravity, walking on walls, guns that are alive, bugs as grenades.... = awesome

Are you kidding? Prey is the most original FPS to come out in a long damn time. If youre an FPS fan and you dont like Prey, just stop playing FPS.

the gameplay is completely different than any other fps out there, and the story is about as in depth as you can get, with excellent plot development (trips to the spirit world, etc).

Excellent graphics and sound. The weapons are very cool and each one has its unique qualities. If you say Prey sucks you really need to take a look at some of the other FPS's that have been released lately.

The full version is D.O.A as far as multiplayer is concerned. Hardly anyone is playing, it doesn't seem to be taking off very well.

I thought the demo was great. The first game I've played in awhile thats actually a game and not a world war 2 interactive movie.

I loved the demo. It was very fun and original. I really liked the 'alive' weapons. And the music ;)

Comparing this to System Shock? Didn't somebody just make a thread complaining about people not liking a game because it's not a DIFFERENT game? :p

I liked the demo, but i'm in no rush to go out and buy it. Maybe after it drops in price. I personally am trying to branch out and play something different than FPS games lately.

yeap

So glad a new thread was started about this too despite the already "front page" thread.

I like the recommendation of: Go play system shock 2. That's great. Lots of us already have.

other peoples opinions is like shit on the bottom of my shoe :) I enjoy prey, fun game, and something different for those of us that like fps's

I didn't like the game either, but that doesn't mean it flat out sucks. It's just not my style of FPS.

totally eh? a critic or an opinion means
poo.gif
until I say give it! don't get me started on sports critics cause they just love spouting off and can never predict
poo.gif
. ...but come to a high traffic forum and blast a new game that clearly has a lot of interest and..well, you see what happens

I do find fps's all the same as of late. no one is breaking outta the mold and pioneering. with that said this game does take a tiny step forward IMHO. I don't think as bad as you painted but we're all entitled to voice things. its a forum after all =)

wasnt quite my style of FPS..but i do like the concept.i cant say it sux. i really wanna know what kind of games u normally play?

YOU FAIL

Seriously Prey is one of the most innovative FPS to hit in a very very very long time.

Personally I don't see what's so inovative about Prey. You get to walk on walls, but honestly it's not that intresting at all, as if it is a catwalk upside down in a normal game. The gravity flipping tihng is pretty cool, but again it's not very intresting because Prey is an extremely linear game. The portals are just like a see through door with a halo around it to me. Alive weapons have been done 8 years ago by Half Life. I'm not saying that Prey sucks, I just don't see what's so inovative about it. IMHO I found the large open maps of Farcry and its AI that call in reinforcements according to what you do, and the ability to go in stealthly or guns blazing to be far more inovative. I guess I just don't like linear games.

Gimmicks, and depthless ones at that.

totally, the originator gave great points to which they feel are lacking. thus such a worthy post and what so many on here do not have. saying the feed the troll comment is trolling in itself. this place makes it so apparant trolling is uneeded. the poor buggars should not have to moderate so much and close threads so close to being created

Maybe a 56k er would rather read your review of a demo rather than play it themself. MAYBE.

I agree as Prey is a really awesome game. However, some people feel that everyone in the world just has to know their opinion. At least this person offered some good reasons to why he/she didn't like Prey rather than the usual

**** SUCKS, or whatever lame comment many haters tend to make.

Just add a poll to this section. Did you enjoy Prey? Yes or No?

I was going to say something similar but decided to actually read the replies to see first :p

Honestly, Prey is what it is. Some people will enjoy the simple gameplay with the new gravity/portals as twists. The gravity and portals are gimmicks, yes, but they're fun gimmicks. Unfortunately I think that the game doesn't justify the price of admission though, so I won't be buying it. After finding out it was so short, I think I'll spend $50 on something else :/ Maybe when it's in the bargain bin.

I really did like the ideas, lots of original things going on. Native American protagonist who can spirit walk, portals, crazy gravity, great music :D , but if the single player is that short, it's not worth the money to me.

I thought the Prey demo was pretty impressive. Sure in some areas it feels like Doom 3 or Quake 4 because of the engine, but overall it has some unique gameplay. First FPS game that has ever made me feel 'weird' when playing it because of the constant disorientation with wall walking, etc. I like the story line, and the amount of interactivity with items in the levels (especially the beginning - reminded me of Duke 3D). It may not be as open-ended as Far Cry, but I will still be buying this game at some point! I do believe that the original poster has some valid points in regards to System Shock 2 still being far more of a scary game with a very in-depth storyline. Sure wish something like it would come along that could take advantage of today's PC hardware!!!!

The Marine in Doom never actually talked. Also if you paid attention the game kinda even makes fun of Doom. There's an area where it's dark and he says "man it's dark, I'm Doomed".

Most people love it when the character actually has something to say. The character in Prey didn't have anything witty to say but he did give you an idea of how he reacts like a normal human being. Saying things like "that's fucked up" to "no this is fucked up" turns a mute into a human being.

You mean you were never amazed with the portal and gravity system? Also the idea of random encounters is to make it seem more immersive. Really did you want to know what was going to happen next?

Weapons

The weapons are tame and not very interesting, their sound effects are plush and not as instant as i.e Quake 3 or Half Life 2 machine gun. With those we get more solid feeling.

What fps actually explains the guns? You shot. You fire. You learn. Do you really want someone to teach you how to use your new toy?

Personally if you've seen one machine gun you've seen them all. It's nice to see different and inventive looking weapons for once. Did you want 5 different versions of the machine gun?

You want to see them blow up and dismember? Besides the disturbing look into your mind wasn't the ship that's nearly half covered in body parts and flesh enough to satisfy your dismemberment fetish?

If I want brainless and fun action let me have Doom 1&2, there we have huge arenas, lots of monsters, satesfying hits (pronounced and solid blood splatter, made possible because of the low resolution), satesfying death animations and weapons with personality and good sound FX. Just to let you know John Carmack didn't have anything to do with Prey beyond the Doom 3 engine. It did take 10 years to create Prey so you can assume that the only thing ID Software did was supply the graphics engine. Did you ever think that maybe they used the Doom 3 engine because it works perfectly for Prey?

Prey is an innovative game that gives FPS a breath of fresh air. The only problem I had with Prey is that I beat it in 6 hours.

Did not care for the demo myself.. Others might find the game appealing though.. It does not deserve a "don't buy ever" label because, obviously, a number of people are enjoying it..

games aren't deep anymore dude. Why? because when your making games for consoles...you don't THINK About an intelligent crowd. :p

To me this game had alot more in it that made it cool. The spirit mode/fighting. The gravity, while the ideas aren't super original the way it was corperated into the game made it fun and fast. I loved the game, I beat it yesterday.

i thought prey was interesting, but not too different from all of the other shooters. take away the living guns and environment, and i still feel like i'm playing quake 4 but with wall walking. a thumbs up for this game, but it's nothing ground breaking

...pick I or you, not both. regardless, some people like some games and others don't. you're a fan, but the op is not. name calling is not needed ;)

I played through the demo and was underwelmed. If I was given the full version I'd never load it. I'd rather play through FarCry for the 3rd time then Prey once (if the demo was indicative of the full version),

so far im enjoying the game. better then another ww2 shooter.

Yeah, I agree. Why don't we see some new FPS games in different time settings? World War 1??? Or, Civil War... musket loading lol. But yeah, I agree with in1ine5k/\t3r, he really hit the nail on the head. The game is short, but there are some fun puzzles (don't want to give anything away as far as spoilers), let's just say I had one hell of a time figuring out the room full of gravity walkways, and the 4 generator type room. Also, the visuals are great, and Doom 3 is by far one of the most impressive game engines ever created as far as detail, shadows, and lighting.

I don't know how you can say that if you like FarCry, and you didn't give any logical, or any at all reason as to why you were underwhelmed. I mean, my buddy called me from across the state just to tell me how interactive the first sequence was in the demo, and I was amazed by it. I mean, I loved FarCry, Half Life 2, Doom 3, and Prey is a very good game. You are not telling the truth when you say that if you were just given the game, then you wouldn't load it. It is very good, and I suggest getting it.

Just played the actual SP game or the begaining, at a friends for about an hour, it's too much like QUAKE 4, with Doom Graphics engine and lightning. It has a few new tricks up its sleeve, but it's not great. Heck, it's almost like fighting the strogg on their mothership but, with doom interface/gameplay.

My Rating

Graphics 8/10
Gameplay 6/10
Story 7/10
Enjoyibility 7/10

IMO is it worth the money? No.
Is it worth playing at a friends? Yes I suppose.

*Puts on Flamesuit*

Take me serious or not, I'm not a troll, this is just my opinion.

I think its "meh".

It's not tripe...but its not exactly earth shattering either. Whats the big deal about being able to switch the gravity?

I wouldnt call it innovative to be honest.

Prey is a very interesting addition to anybody's FPS collection.

The concept is refreshing.
The use of the Doom 3 engine is polished.
The "living weapon" and "living ship" concepts are well done.
The use of portals and gravity make for a new and interesting twist on traditional puzzles.....did you or did you not have to stop and say to yourself:"where did that shot come from, or if I walk on the ceiling maybe I can get over there????" I mean really.....when was the last time you had to factor in a pathway that took you on the ceiling????
Now.....Ive played well over 5 1/2 hours and unless this wraps up very quickly, I'd say I have a long way to go. Too short, i dont know.....but then I dont have the luxary to sit at my computer and play games 8 hours a day.
Things that could be better.....I'd like to see even more use of the portal and gravity....put enemies all over the place, port them in from behind so you'd always have to look over your shoulder.
Dont waste time with the aliens speaking poor english.

Overall this is a game worth playing, it's been alot of fun so far.
Compared to HL2 at 50 bucks......I'd say maybe it's a bit over-priced.
