I've heard that AMD will continue the FX line for the rest of 2004 in both Socket 939 and 940 variants. At least Socket 940 isn't really a "dead" socket--you'll be able to buy newer and faster Opterons for quite some time, eventually in dual core configurations. It's just a different path.

<edit>Doh .. no, it was my typo. I read "2H" as 2nd quarter. 2H is 2nd Half. Therefore, the suspect 4.0/4.4 launch could very well be the Socket 775. According to their roadmap image:

This "2H" would also back up an interview I read that said they'd be targetting a 4.0+ launch in late 2004.

The next-generation chipset (new high-end) will either be Grantsdale-P or Alderwood (I actually suspect Alderwood, as Grantsdale supposedly features Intel Extreme Graphics 3), bumping the 875P to the mainstream, and 865 to the bargain bin.

Both the NGC (Alderwood?) and 875P will support Prescott at launch.

$64 question: Will Alderwood support PCI-Express at launch?

$128 question: Will a modified i875P support PCI-Express?

Opterons with two cores on one chip aren't available yet, but they are in the works.

I don't think that the i875P chipset will ever drop to "mainstream" status. It will probably support Prescott until the debut of Grantsdale/Alderwood, when it will then fade away like E7205 "Granite Bay," another once-high-end chipset. Grantsdale will take the high end, while Alderwood will take the "mainstream" if you could call it that.

Alderwood will almost certainly support PCI Express, because it is derived straight from Grantsdale. And it would be silly of Intel to revisit i875P at this point, with a host of new features in the works for a brand new chipset (Grantsdale/Alderwood).

I would expect the 3.6Ghz P4 in Q4 of 2003 at least thats when I got mine.

Wait I dont have the SSE3 (which isnt in any software yet) or the 1Mb cache... but I dont really need the extra 512KB when I'm getting 6000Mb/s
