OK, I've got a P4E 3.0 w/HT, and it is WAY too hot. I've switched cases, swapped out the cooler and generally done everything possible to make the little fvker cool down, but the on-board temp sensor is hitting the mid-70's (C) in the summer heat.

Currently running 2x120mm case fans, 80mm PSU fan, Zalman 92mm all-copper flower w/ AS5 applied properly. I'm overclocking a whopping 166mhz, but even with the OC off, it doesn't make much difference in temps, about 1 degree C.

The only "bad" thing I am doing is sitting it in between my desk and the wall, but the outflow from the fans is pointing into the larger part of the room. The intake is not getting the coolest air in the apartment, but it still isn't HOT, per-se.

I'm guessing that my prescott shouldn't be above 69, based upon the intel spec sheets, so I would really like to get the thing to cool down before it melts down, either itself, or my aluminum case.

Any suggestions for cooling it down? I am almost ready to convert to water, but I REALLY don't want to invest the time to troubleshoot a system that might leak onto my expensive components. No A64 jokes please, as I need the P4 for this task-configuration.
 
Using the homemade air duct from the above article and the XP-90 heatsink my dual prime95 load temp is 64C. This is with a E0 3.2e running at 4Ghz with a 1.46 vcorr. Room temp 80F.
 
I've got the 3.0E, I hit 40-50C under FULL load, depending on my room temp, its at 43 now (with BOINC running, and case temp is 27)

I run a zalman cnps 7000cu in a basically open case (funny design) and a 120 and 92mm enermax fan.

SO, 70 is really quite high, maybe try re-applying your HSF, as too much thermal compound can act as an insulator.

Even OCed the tiny bit that i've done (to 3.4 and back) it never gets above 50 full load.


I reccomend the zalman 7000cu (or 7700cu if you can fit it) or the thermalright xp-90c, they work the best.

Otherwise, i dunno, hows your wiring? Sloppy?
 
id bet your board is just misreporting.

touch the fins of that cooler, when its dissapating that much heat it will get warm to the touch, the whole thing.
 
Prescott air cooling with Zalman never exceeded 50° C under load. I too, say incorrect (low) temp reporting.
 
well, I have the Zalman 7000cu on it right now, and it is still reporting those temps. I don't have a vent over the cpu cooler, and my wiring is fairly good, as I try and keep it from blocking the airflow from the intake to the cpu cooler to the outtake and PSU. I tuck my wires above the optical drives and into unused nooks and crannies of the case. I seriously doubt it is too much thermal compound, as I only use a very little, about a grain of rice's worth of AS5.

I have a heat probe for my gatewatch sandwiched in between the copper and aluminum portions of the heatsink, and it reports temps about 25C LOWER than the mobo reported temps, but I just don't know which to trust. I am using a DFI Lanparty 865PE, revision A. I guess I can look for an updated bios, but does anyone have any other thoughts?
