I was reading over the dual core gaming thread and wondering something....if you guys could give me some insight, it would be great.

Im going from a single core opty to a dual core, do i need to do anything before i remove my old cpu? as in installing anything before hand? i figured i would install the stuff after i install the cpu, but wanted to make sure.

Anything else to look out for, for anyone who has done the samething?
 
Chances are you may need to reinstall the OS; a lot of problems occur when you drop a dual core proc into a system that has the OS installed using a single core proc. You may get away with uninstalling the "processor" in the device manager... but if that doesn't work then you'll need to reformat.
 
thanks for the info, not looking forward to reformatting....any luck for anyone not having to reinstall OS to swap from single core to dual core?

Like I said - you may be lucky and all may work, or you may not be lucky and it will BSOD on you.

ya, i think i need to take steps just in case it doesnt.....have had some luck swapping mobo out, which normally is pretty tough....but for some reason, i think this is going to require i reinstall.

Thanks for the info on removing the processor from device manager, didnt even think about that.
 
I didnot have to reformat.
All did was set the cpu settings to auto in bios--- install the 170 ---and I did the AMD fix and the Microsoft fix.
The computer is faster than the SD3700 @ 2655 MHZ.it replaced. And it totally stable.
 
You don't have to reformat, and while it can be a pain in the ass...it'll feel so much smoother. I reformatted after I got all my drivers in order for this opty.
 
thanks guys, makes me feel better...im in the process of backing stuff up right now and scamming everywhere for space, got some stuff packed on my 30GB zen and on my laptop....let me ask you something....

Do you install the drivers and otimizer / dual core hacks before putting in the CPU or after?
 
well, i got it installed and didnt have to reinstall windows.

I did get a few blue screens before i was able to get the optimizer installed. I tried to install it in safe mode and no go.

I finally did a few clears of cmos and set my overclock and happy to report that it seems to work out fine. I installed 3 updates total for the switch over.

My new cpu is priming away right now at 2.7, will let it run the night and keep my fingers crossed. Wish me luck..

Btw, awesome idea to remove the processor from device manager, when the system booted for the first time, it automatically detected the cpu as a dual core.

Thanks for all who helped, lets see how much difference a dual core vs a single core at the same speed be.

If anyone who is trying this and like some more info, just post here and let me know. Ill give you all the steps i took in the order i did it in. Hopefull help others out.
