trying to make a video for an english project. using premiere pro cs3. i have a video clip with audio, i want another audio music clip to be in the back ground but i want it to fade in and out at certain times when the main audio takes over. i guess it comes down to changing the db at certain times, but i don't know how to do that and make the transistion between the changes fade in and fade out.

thanks for all the help

I don't have Adobe but I assume it's very similar to Vegas or any other high dollar video editor. You should have a multitrack view where you can drag and drop other audio other than the primary audio channel. Then on that track you should be able to drag a transition on to the track at the beginning (fade in transition) and end (fade out). It should be something similar to this.

Also a very suprisingly good tutorial site sometimes is you tube. I wish I could give you more detailed info regarding Premiere, but maybe someone else can elaborate.

good luck

To fade in and out music you need to hit the drop down carrot looking thing on that video clips line in the timeline. This will expand the audio details for the video clip.

There are two ways to edit the sound within Premiere, you can choose to edit the channel or the volume.

It should default to volume.

The audio bar will show you a graph of the audio levels with a line down the middle for the volume level. If you want the audio to fade out / in at any point click once at the point you want it to fade out on that line. It will create a point, you drag this point down or up to make it louder or softer.

If you want it to remain steady till the fade out put a point on the line a little behind your fade out so it will not start the fade out from the beginning on the clip.

You can use audio all in one line, but if you have audio attached to the video clip itself put the new audio in an underlying audio layer. If you need one right click the layer area to the left of the time line and "add" an audio layer. If your adding an audio layer for your second track (cant remember if premiere defaults a few extra ones in for you) you will have to expand its details in the time line as well like the video clip.

If you want the sound to cross fade just have the fade in on one clip start as the other clip starts its fade out. You might need to adjust this depending on dialogue or what have you.

thanks for your help, i have been just cutting the audio clip and adjusting it that way, it doesn't sound as good so i'm gonna try your suggestion, but i have another question.

how do i seperate the audio from the video. they always seem to be attached and i don;t want to try something and mess up the sync of the whole clip. i want to put the video of the movie with the audio of another part.

thanks

It has been a while since I have messed with removing some audio from a clip, I'll have to take a look. I remember in older versions that were A / B line editing you could jsut select the audio and push delete. In later versions however this deletes the video as well.

To the left on the side of the timeline where you expand the audio options is a speaker that will disable the output of audio. Likewise if you have no keyframes on the audio just mouse over the level line and drag it to the bottom to mute the levels.

I am sure there's a quicker way but it has been a while since I have messed around with that aspect of it.

right-click on the video in the timeline and select "unlink audio and video"
