note: steam defaults to the 64 bit code path once it updates, but you can force 32 bit by launching the game with the command "-32bit" unfortunately the 32 bit path seems to introduce corruption with water, as seen here.

i ran through various levels with fraps and cut my benchmarks right before the loading of the next portion of the level, as that drops your fps to 0 while it loads. unfortunately i don't have my regular monitor, so i can't do 1600x1200 testing. all tests were done with the machine in my sig, all settings at max, 4xAA, 8xAF, and MSAA. numbers are min, max, avg.

WATER HAZARD
32 bit:
640x480: 43, 289, 108.2
1024x768: 45, 295, 114.1
1280x960: 43, 225, 101

64 bit:
640x480: 45, 288, 113.7
1024x768: 41, 289, 113.1
1280x960: 44, 240, 101.9

it looks like there isn't much difference at all between the two code paths, at least on my machine, on this particular level, at these resolutions and settings. i'm going to try other levels that might not be as shader intensive to see what i come up with.

-----------------------------------

NOVA PROSPEKT
32 bit:
640x480: 68, 245, 123.4
1024x768: 66, 231, 114.3
1280x960: 68, 222, 105.7

64 bit:
640x480: 56, 221, 98.7
1024x768: 56, 241, 94.0
1280x960: 56, 202, 95.8

i don't know what's going on there, but i'm running them again to make sure i didn't switch the results.

edit: here are the numbers from my 2nd run through of nova prospekt.

32 bit:
640x480: 69, 237, 119.1
1024x768: 61, 230, 112.2
1280x960: 62, 213, 111.1

64 bit:
640x480: 65, 221, 104.3
1024x768: 66, 201, 103.1
1280x960: 60, 210, 99.3

i'm definitely getting lower results running the 64 bit path. so far running the 64 bit version has resulted in no difference to as much as 20 percent slower. not cool valve, not cool. hopefully lost coast puts up a better showing.

--------------------------------
i ran lost coast with the same settings as HL2 with full HDR. i played through the entire level, cutting off the benchmark right after i shot down the second helicopter.

LOST COAST
32 bit
640x480: 32, 157, 84.0
1280x960: 31, 139, 57.3

64 bit
640x480: 21, 165, 79.6
1280x960: 12, 117, 57.2

lost coast is just as disappointing as HL2. the average framerates were within the margin of error, but look at what running the 64 bit code path did to the minimum frame rates.

That sucks. I wonder if it could be the video card drivers slowing it down, rather than the game.

I hope they can iron out the little things and get 64-bit stuff running a bit faster. It'd help ease the transition to a 64-bit mainstream.

:) Thanks for the benchies!

werd, thanks for the benchies.

At least we are still getting our feet wet with 64 bit :p

Physics calculations and what not are probably faster in 64-bit, but with less mature and slower video card drivers, that cannot make up the difference. I blame poor driver support. In the future 64-bit will outpace 32-bit, particularly when games start to be made as 64-bit, and then have secondary 32-bit versions, instead of having the 64-bit as a secondary option.

you guys are most welcome :)

i'm using the 81.98s, but i might try the newer beta drivers, depending on how sober i am in the next few days. i also threw in the 6x4 tests to take the video card out of the equation.

yeah, i sort of figured that the physics and AI might benefit from running in 64 bit, which is why i chose the nova prospekt level because it has all the combine and you get to mess with the bug bait, but that level had the worst showing out of the ones i tested. i also noticed that the slight pause that i get before barrels explode was still there in the 64 bit version. i think the poor performance with 64 bit code paths is mostly because the game wasn't really coded to take advantage of 64 bit procs to begin with. the paths are just sort of cobbled together so that they work, but aren't really optimized. really, the only reason i'm going to be running HL2, lost coast, or aftermath in 64 bit mode is so the water doesn't look like a bad acid trip.

strange..i was going to do some tests with the newer NVIDIA beta drivers, but now nzone only has the 81.87s for download.
