i downloaded a third party app (clockgen) for my abit ic7. the version of clockgen i d/l'ed
is specific to my abit board. all it asks is to adjust the fsb is to push a slider right or left.
is this in itself sufficient to achieve a basic overclock ?

for a basic overclock its sufficient but to get the best overclock you'll need to do some BIOS tweaking. Asjusting RAM timings and doing a little tweaking here and there in the BIOS will probably give you a higher overclock. If you're just looking for a quick 'n easy way, go for the software

Usually third party overclocking utilities for windows are made for mainboard that may have chipset that allow overclocking but the bios doesnt support it. With a high end board like the Abit IC7, i highly recommend the overlclocking to be done through the bios for LONG term use. I only use windows overclocking apps to test the limits of my cpu to save time.

i understand that i may need to make a volt adjustment (too) through the bios. i have issues with heat though so when i ask for a means to achieve a basic overclock i'm also looking for a way to minimize the additional stress on the cpu. this may not be possible.

but to do that i may have to look to memory timings. i'm not sure. i have a 2.4c with stock cooling and two case fans. my apartment does not have air conditioning and temps here in nyc can get high and humidity is always an issue. its just soooo tempting to have a windows-based utility that with a simple push of a slider will help you see an increase in speed.

this specific software is designed for the abit ic7. i have never found cause to update the
board's bios. the rig has no issues. nothing but stable since i pieced it together. its because of its stability that i'm given this impression that it could withstand an overclock even though i lack advanced air cooling and case air flow is not magnificent either. the simplicity of the utility makes me wonder what is possible.
