PPU's Dead

Looks like you can only online order them. There are enough games out that make use of it that I currently play or will play. I definitly want one, but I am a little concerned purchasing something that major retails have chosen not to stock anymore.

Big Box retailers are sheep to their immediate localized bottom line. That is, while your local stores may have let it go, a store in Atlanta may not be able to get enough of them. Even if your local store was stocking it, it's probably better to get it online anyway since you'll likely pay less and no tax.
 
You lot should consider yourself lucky; you can get a PPU for around $150/£80 in the US, the cheapest I have seem them go for in the UK is £128/$252.
 
If you order one online from say Best Buy or Circuit City (pick a store that you have local access to) then you can always return it to the store if you have a problem in the first 30 days, or decide not to keep it.
