PPU useful NOW?

Is a dedicated PPU useful right NOW?

  • Total voters

  • Poll closed .
You may want to edit the questions a little. I found it useful now and worth 300 for the tinkering appeal - fruits will be landing shortly :) But I don't think it's useful for EVERYONE now - just niche for the second.

Other people, I am sure, are going to put out their "for everyone" views. :s

EDIT IRTB:

cool bud - damn forum edits, eh? :(

of course this question is meant for everyone personally and I'm not looking for someone trying to speak for everyone. Can't edit titles since that functionality has been taken away from ordinary users.

I voted.

MooseEdit: If you have nothing nice to say, say nothing.

It's just a poll and i tried to word it as neutral as possible, regardless of my own opinions. There really is no need for anyone trying to convince the majority of their beliefs....we have more than enough threads of those in this forum already.

And no, this is not flame bait either.

i will buy a PPU when I see some benefits. Faster/ dedicated F@H client would probably sway me too. Not worth $300 now. I am not sufficiently well off to purchase a $300 piece of hardware on the promise that "it may be useful" in the future.

BTW, i am aware that option 2 and 3 in the poll is very similar. There is a difference between them though:

option 2 is for people that probably would consider paying $300 in the future if they see it's worth it for them

option 3 is for people who consider $300 too much. period. Even if they see a use for a PPU in the future, they would not buy it for $300.

I voted. Now how long before Terra comes in spouting his usual AGEIA propaganda.....:)

I really think he only does it because loads of people come back with the same stuff again and again... There's no denying that after repeatedly saying the same thing you get annoyed and confused as to why the heck people are still coming back and insisting on what someone else said earlier!

I think this whole debate will cool off once there are some decent games out for the PPU and people can take it or leave it based on what they like.

An ordinary game and a fun yet limited demo on release was Ageia's biggest mistake. An in-house tech demo using UE3 and having spots for testing all the features would have been much better for seeing what it could do, and then the actual buying decision could be left up to peeps as stated earlier.

As it is now, people who don't really want to dig beneath the surface and check out what's there just don't really know what it's capable of and can do. So arguing that the games aren't worth it ties into the hardware too.

This also explains why loads of people who argue that way have come to the conclusion HFX is better - because they're more comfortable with GPU's, and they own one so they obviously get excited their GPU can do that.

All it needs is time :)

Your wrong no one has said in awhile a gpu is better then a ppu in physics. More people are just happy that it's a cheaper more viable decision then the PPU.

I will buy one when there is a measurable impact to games I play as long as it greatly enhances the experience. to ask for 300 today is like buying penny stock in a company that only shows promise and no return on investment.

He seems to be be away from his keyboard. He did make his first reply kinda early must be working or something?

WTF, is he not here yet

I wonder, does any of you know if he got his PPU yet ? i seem to recall him saying something about it but that was a while back and he has been kinda quiet since :D ;) :D

yeah.. he got it while back... he seems very pleased with it.
I guess to him its something worth defending.

my last post went clean over your head...

it was sarcasim at its finest ;) :D

I know he got it, thats why i said, he has been quiet about it :)

Terra - am just joking if you see this, its all in good nature ;)

Why do you have terra in your sig just like the real terra?

And damn, I need to read the poll next time, I voted wrong...

Yeah he seemed very pleased with it until a day later when his Puter blew up. So remember kids don't get a PPU it will blow up your PC like Terra's :)

why isn't there a choice of - "it's not useful now but will be in the future"- that's my vote!

PPU is very useful right now, they're great for keeping dust out of a PCI slot. If you've got more than one slot, just buy another PPU.

Isn't there? I thought there are even 2 of those choices, one for $300 and one for useful in the future but not for $300....or did i miss anything?

It is there, second one from top. ~50% voted for it (including me). Good news if you ask me.

I voted useful in the future but not worth $300. If they (whoever it will be) come down in price to around $100-$150, I'd consider. Right now as it stands though, I couldn't afford another $300 card in my computer and would rather live without PPU.

it's not useful now, but will be in the future--> that's my vote

ur choice includes not worth $300 in the future. I will pay it when games utilizes it.

Nono, the vote includes not worth $300 NOW. Your choice was correct then. It would mean that you would shell out $300 if you think it's useful sometime in the future.

Some funny posts in this thread :D
Got one, it makes "me tick", but it's not all that would hav it the same way.

Terra - Of too MORE drinking in the danish summer *hischk* :D

ok. well. i believe eventually a deticated physics processer will be standard on any gaming rig. i mean its definatly gonna make it big, but i dont think Ageia's Physix will survive.

Ageia needed a much much more aggresive stance on physics to corner the market. they gave Nvidia and ATI wayyy to much time to counter. What they shoulda done is patented everything. Copyrighted everything. the term Physics in a game should have been a register trade mark of Ageia. thats the only way they could sucessfully own Nvidia and ATI. but they didnt, as such ATI now has X1600s doing physics, Havok is reaking Havoc on Ageia.

no, my personally theory of the best way to get physics is integrated, i mean on the mobo. like say a couple years from now Nforce 600 is released. 630, 650, 670 and 690. 690 would have a killer integrated physics processing unit.

i have never looked at the architecture of the PPU from ageia in the slightest, but i can tell by the fact that its on a good-ol PCI port that its not doing all that much.

thats my theory anyways. i think it could work. lol. maybe by the Xpress 9000 and Nforce 700 we might have socketed PPUs, and Socketed GPUs, who knows.

The new (or maybe old to you europes) 3d world magazine has a good article on the Ageia card. Remember this is a 3d graphics and animation magazine it dosn't have anything to do specificly with games but more about how they are made and also how cg stuff for movies, architecture, and short demo reels are done. They talked about how Mobo manufactures are already talking about putting this chip on the mobo were it would be a good option. Although I think it would force owners to have atleast 2 gig's of ram in order to supply the ram for this device. Anyway it's a pretty good read has a few positive comments from developers but it still cites the main complex of why Ageia is not a big thing right now. I say it's a very neutral article (not a review just a story about the card)

you wouldnt happend to have a linky? or is it only available in stores? sounds like a nice read.

I voted that it's not worth $300 right now, but perhaps later.

My guess as for what is going to happen is that there will be a convergence of the GPU and PPU into a very generic vector processor. As it stands now, that's the direction GPUs are going anyway.

You can try googling 3dworld magazine but last I checked there site is very basic and lack any real information so I doubt the article will be there. Also I don't own a scanner sorry I will try to find one though. Otherwise they sell this mag at Barnes and Border's although Borders is about a buck cheaper. Noted this magazine is imported so it's pretty expensive. It's a pretty dense magazine though with lots of info about 3d graphics and what not. It's $15 in the US but includes a cd with good software and 3d models/scenes to toy with.

As it stands now after over 100 votes, about half the people think it's not worth it right now, but maybe in the future for $300.

Another ~25% thinks it's overpriced and will not be usefull for that kind of money in the future either.

Then another ~25% thinks it's not useful. Period.

I think we can pretty much neglect the ~5% of people that think it's worth it now.

This means that out of 100 people, only 5 or 6 would buy one. And that on a site that supposingly has enthusiasts (we can pretty much assume that the average Joe does not buy a card right now, so the total numbers sold are really pretty low). To me, that does not look very good financially for the companies selling these cards at the moment, or at least not for their PPU division.

Besides I don't need to "hype" anything...ATI just made sure of that :D

Terra...

Well, a year without competition but also a year with almost no sales. UT2007 is not coming out before the end of the year, nor are many other games that utilize the PPU other than for effects.

By the time those games are out, the supposingly inferior ATI solution will be available as well and will probably attract more customers.

ScYcS - no need to hype anything, Terra makes sure of that already... ;) (<---- always wondered why people sign their post....it's not that we can't spot your name on the post header anyways)
