Whats better?

4 X 1
or
4 X 2

Just wondering if the GeForce FX 5900 would be worth to buy...

how much u paying for the 5900? under 140 would be a decent price..anything higher then 6600gt :)

and don't worry about the pipelines....4x2 would be better...aka 8?

Thanks,

Whats the difference between 8x1 and 4x2?
Im just curious. And are the 5900 series known to be good cards?

well if you think about it, the more pixels you have per clock the better. 8 pipeline video cards aren't that bad for the average gamer, but when you start getting into games like doom3 (i know, lame example), you need more than that to run it well. If you just play simple games like cs and such, this card will do the job, also depends how much money you wanna spend :D can get some nice deals here ;)

I know, and i dont have too much money to spend, i just want something as good as i can get for cheap. Like something no more than a 6600Gt, i dont even think i have the money for that but my question was, what exactly is the difference between 4x2 and 8x1? And overall have the 5900 series been known to be good cards?

they aren't all that good even when they were new...thier dx9 support is buggy in some games....you didn't say how much you were paying for the card yet....I would suggest a 9800pro or a 6600gt....you can probably get a 9800pro for about teh same price of the 5900U ...and trust me on this one..skip the FX series and jump onto the 6600 or 6800 or 9800 series card at least...

I would spring for the extra cash and get the 6600GT. While the 5900 would be a good card for Doom3, for DirectX9 games like FarCry and Half Life 2 it is quite slow.

my bro plays HL2 with a 5900XT quite fine.

his system is the only thing holding him back, 2.8 northwood @ stock and DDR400 @ stock.

if he overclocked to 3.4 and some nice memory he would be fine.

The 5900xt will run Half-Life 2 ok, but only Directx 8 codepath. If you switch to the directx 9 codepath, the 5900 sucks.

Unless you force the mixed mode path using 3D Analyze, then only a couple of shaders in a few short segments in the game have banding and the game runs very well in DX9 mode. :p

Or you can fool HL2 into believing that the 5900 (or any NV3x card for that matter) is a Radeon 9800 and use 3D Analyze again, then a magic (very fast) DX8.1 path with reflect world opens up. I detailed the procedure in the locked valve/hl2 thread.

An 8x1 card can output 8 pixels per clock with one texture applied. A 4x2 card can only output 4 pixels per clock but can apply 2 textures to each pixel. The thing is with the advancement in shaders having two texture units in a pipeline is becoming fairly useless since most of the texture blending is done in a pixel shader. I would get a 9800 pro over the 5900 any day.
