I thought Id share a problem I had and the final solution incase anyone else out there has lost as much hair as me over this problem.
The situation Everything was fine up until a few weeks ago then - Playing a DVD in PowerDVD resulted in the film stuttering sound and video every second or so.
Equipment
Abit 35pro
Auzentech X-Fi Prelude 7.1 (installed 3 weeks after clean XP build)
Playing the DVD in media player worked perfectly with sound.
Disabling the Prelude soundcard driver caused the stuttering to stop in PowerDVD but no sound!
Playing the DVD in PowerDVD with the onboard sound chip worked perfectly
Reinstalling soundcard, DVD drive, PowerDVD multiple times with different versions of Driver and software resulted in the same problem
Trying a 100 and 1 other things from DMA adjustments to swapping DVD drives to hacking about in the registry made zero difference.
I was thinking about a clean install because everything pointed to a driver issue with the Auzentech X-Fi Prelude 7.1, but I wanted to test a few things first So I had the Prelude disabled and the onboard sound active under Device Manager, switching between the two when I accidently left them both active. Hey Presto PowerDVD works perfectly when both sound devices installed and active.
Disabling the onboard sound instantly causes the stutter to return, activating it again fixes it. So somewhere along the line the drivers for the onboard and card based soundcards seem to have gotten confused when playing DVDs with PowerDVD.
Ive no idea if this is going to be any use to anyone, but it might save someone the headache Ive just had.
This is a temp fix, Im guessing I should reinstall the whole lot making sure never to install the drivers for the onboard sound, but thats for another week
