Powercolor 6850 SCS3 setup

Just got one of these passive PowerColor 6850's and am using the 8.91 driver. Can anyone offer some setup advice?

When I first started using the card I was able to display simultaneous images using both the DVI and the HDMI outputs. Now for some reason the card has stopped displaying the same simultaneous images.

For example, let's say I have the DVI monitor displaying @ 1024x768. When I try to plug in the HDMI monitor (a TV) I lose all my desktop icons and the screen just displays the windows logo. I unplug the HDMI and I get the desktop back on the DVI monitor.

When booting with both monitors connected all I get is the same windows logo, no desktop.

The HDMI display will work properly but now it only works if there is no other monitor connected to the card

I'm hoping this is just a simple software setup change. Anyone care to offer some input?

Rig is a HTPC, Asus p8z68Deluxe/Gen3, Passive 35w i5 2390t, Passive Prolima Armageddon, Passive Kinwin 500w PSU, 4 gb Ram, Passive Powercolor 6850 SCS3, (2) C300 64gb (1)M4 64gb Raid 0, Xfi Elite, Win7 32, Silverstone CW02, rear case fan cooling the CPU, Silverstone FX121 cooling the GPU.

Well, I'm not completely sure, but wouldn't a much newer driver be preferred over one as old as the one you're using?
I'd think a lot of things might have been fixed from the 8 series driver you're using and the 11 series drivers that are out now.

If that doesn't work you might just have a bad card. I haven't heard anything really good about powercolor.

The 8.91 device driver I'm using came directly from the powercolor site and is dated 12/13/11. Could you be referring to the Catalyist driver ver.11?

@delvryboy, Any idea how to unset it? I can only get into catalyst when in single monitor DVI so maybe I just cant find the right screen to do it.

In fact my computer monitor has dual inputs (DVI and VGA). When I run the monitor on the VGA with a DVI adapter, then try to output to the monitor with a DVI cable, I get no signal at all.

I'm sure I changed something but I have no idea how to change it back.

right click on desktop, then select screen resolution. if you are under windows 7.

i had this card before, it ran pretty hot with passive cooling. you need a good front fan intake to cool it.

@aznever,

I have a silverstone FX121 mounted on the back of the case that is blowing directly on the card. It never goes over 60c.

With one monitor plugged in, I can get to screen resolutions. But obvously the dual monitor options dont appear. My problem is I cant get a desktop when 2 monitors are plugged in.

With a DVI and HDMI monitor hooked up, the screen hangs on the windows logo after start up. No desktop, no mouse curser, no way to make the software change...

click on the detect button, it might find all your available displays.

Thanks for all the replies.

It sounds like I'm probably not stating clearly stating the problem that I'm having with this card. Everyone is suggesting similar solutions, but I'm not able to try any of them. Here is what is happening.

When do a cold boot with both the DVI and the HDMI monitors connected the computer hangs on the desktop wallpaper. It will not display the desktop icons and there is no mouse.

But if I then I unplug either of the monitor connections, the desktop icons immediatly appear and I have mouse functionality. Reconnect the 2nd montior and the screen goes back to the wallpaper, the icons disappear, and the mouse stops working.

So with both monitor interfaces connected, I am unable to get into either display properties or catalyst with both monitors connected, see if the detect button finds both monitors, etc.

With only one connected (either interface) everything works. But obvously because the the 2nd montior is disconnected, it is not detected...

prior to the 6850, did u have an nvidia card? if yes, maybe you should do a drive sweeper.

@aznever,

There were no other graphics drivers installed on this build. But I did just double check device manager found that the intel graphics diriver had been installed automatically. I disabled it but still have the same issue.

I'd like to remove this other driver entirely. any suggestions on a good driver cleaner/remover?

Yes. When both monitors are plugged in the screen shows the same exact thing on both. A desktop with no icons and no mouse functionality.

Unplug either and the desktop icons and mouse come back.

I removed the intel graphics driver in device manager and that cured the problem. But any advice or a link to a good driver removal procedure would be helpful.

I was looking at this subject on antother forum and there sure are alot of confilicting opinions

also maybe you should look @ your bios, and disable the intel graphics in there so windows wont detect it again.
