Power without Motherboard?

I have a non-computer related project, that needs some UV/Led type lighting effects. Basically all the sorts of UV reactive lighting kits (cathod tubes, glow wire, leds) that they sell for computers would be perfect for this. Problem is as far as i know all the power connectors those things use are very specific to the computer power supplies.

It would actually be perfect if I could simply run all that stuff through a computer power supply and just cut out the motherboard/case/etc. Is this possible? Is there some way to get a power supply to start up without the input from the motherboard? Is this even a good idea? Unfortunetly I don't have any experience modifying electrical components.

Thanks for any help,

The easy way is to get a handheld PSU tester that turns it on and checks for faults/lets you use a DMM to check voltages. I have this one:

Another way is to use a paperclip to short the two contacts on the 20/24 ping to start up the PSU. :) Which wires though, I'm sure someone can elaborate on.
