power switch help

To be honest, this is such a simple device that there are only a few things that could possibly go wrong. A few come to mind:

--Plugged into the wrong pins on a motherboard header
--Defective or broken button
--A break in the circuit in the wires or connector attached to the button
--Non-working (for whatever reason) motherboard header

For the first one, check your motherboard manual to make sure it's plugged into the right pins. Polarity doesn't matter here

For the fourth one, try starting the computer up by shorting the two pins on the motherboard together. If that works, than you have narrowed it down to the switch or something attached to it. From then on out, a multimeter (to test continuity) should help you figure out what's wrong.

well turns out it isnt the swtich, i tried my brothers, its something else any ideas :mad:

Well, if it isn't the switch, there are only two factors left:

1) Your motherboard
2) You

Double check to make sure you're plugging it in right :) You never know.

I must agree with my fellow computer geek

Are you absolutly sure you connected a working switch to the correct mobo pins (check your mobo manual)?
are the mains connected to the psu?
is the switch on the psu "on"?

if the answer to all the questions is " yes " then I'm afraid you fried someting more expensive then just a switch


Give us as much info as you can
and please remain calm: We didn't f@ckup your PC

yeah im sure i done everything right, then i took it over to my brothers let him look at it, and used his switch, (same mobo and everything) alas, mine wouldnt turn on lol, its gettin power the light on the mobo turns on, im just punching myself the face for screwing it up lol :p I cant uderstand why it would go bad :confused:

btw asus a8n SLI premium is the mobo
 
Try shorting the pins with something like a coin, or a small screwdriver
 
If shorting the pins isn't helping, there's another problem there.

What happens? Does NOTHING happen, or do the fans and such turn on?
 
Then you've got a DOA motherboard. RMA, rinse and repeat. If shorting didn't boot it, nothing will.

gah i cant, warrenty is gone on it, ive had it over a year, im jsut going to get me a new one and be done with it
 
it could also be the power supply. Have you checked to make sure it works?
