are the ATX power supplies that are being sold on ebay any good? there is a 500w dual fan one on there right now that i wouldn't mind having.

More wattage being a good thing is a definite misconception held by those that are new to PSU's. Wattage rating doesn't mean a thing. Its all about how much wattage it can supply on each rail and its efficiency rating. You should only buy name brand power supplies no matter what you have to pay to get one. Antec and Fortron PSU's are what i recommend. I can guarantee pretty much you definately do not need a 500w psu. I would be looking for a quality 350-400w psu from one of the two names i mentioned. Enermax and Sparkle are a couple more good brands. PCP&C is the top brand but way to expensive. You can get an Antec True Power 430w for around $70 on newegg and thats what i recommend you purchasing without knowing your current specs.

If you have any more questions about PSU's feel free to ask.

Bingo, the budget buyers only choice imho, especially the Fortron/Sparkle. They're of the highest quality and laughably cheap. They're also "underrated" on their labels, meaning a 350w unit is more like a 430w etc etc.

If you're buying a Fortron/Sparkle then get one thats labeled "FSP" in the title (the ones labeled "ATX in the title are cheaper quality). Forget those garbage psu's you see on fleebay.

Buy a lower rated quality power supply as said. If the 500 watt is cheap, like under $50 or so, then it's rating is probably not very realistic. One thing most people dont realize is the efficiency of the generic power supplies is usually much lower than that of the good quality ones, so over the lifetime of the power supply getting a better quality unit will probably make up for itself in your electric bill savings alone. For example, most Antec, Vantec, PCP&C, Enermax, and so on usually have an efficiency around 70-75%, whereas I've seen the cheap-o ones with efficiency around 50-60%, so they'll suck more AC power for the same amount of output.

I totally agree that you shouls stick with the better brand power supplies. I highly recommend an Antec True Power ps.
