Power supply?

pretty soon I will have a e6400, 2 gigs of ddr2 800 ram, 8 usb devices, 4 hdds, 3 cd rom drives, and a x1900gt. I currently have a 500 watt antec. What in the **** do you suggest I use to power this beast?

The Antec will be fine.

C2D draws almost half as much power as previous Intels, and about 3/4 as much as AMDs. You'll do fine.

tagan psu's are pretty good and u can get them upto 1100w nowadays my 480w has 28a on the 12v rail and 48a on the 5v no power fluctuations ever. plus with the 900w or 1100w u get a free leather case lol

also have to agree with inorganic the 500w antec will most likely be more than enough

But the x1900gts are a beast, they require 450watts by themselves, and then I got all that other junk......

450watts? Exaggeration?

I'm putting my vote on Seasonic. I have the S12 series 430watt model for my E6300, 7900gt, 1HD, 1CD-ROM and WC pump plus 3 fans. 29A on the 12V rails, enough for my needs. They make higher wattage models though as well. Very high quality, and SILENT.

Here's a link to the 600w model.

You may also check out the PSU subforum, has a lot of helpful info :)

When video card manufacturers say that you need a given minimum wattage PSU to run their card, they are assuming that you have other components in your computer. No current video card that I've ever heard of actaully uses 450 watts by themselves. They say minimum 450 watt PSU knowing that the PSU will also be powering other things in your computer(mobo/cpu/RAM/HDD's./Optical drive, etc). That being said, it does look like you have quite a few extra components to power(I doubt the graphics card makers factor 4 HDD's and 3 opticals into their estimations of what PSU you'll need), so maybe you willl need a good new power supply and if so, I'm sure someone here can recommend one. It just seemed like you thought the x1900gt ITSELF would use up 450 watts and I just wanted to clear up that it doesn't.

That is right, and remember that nothing in the system is drawing a constant wattage either. Generally, a top-of-the-line current gen video card might draw 250 Watts peak. Thats the MAXIMUM it is going to pull at any given time. The 7950 probably draws more, but that is really more of a 2 card solution. On average they are probably pulling less than half that, maybe 125W.

the psu in my jpac has a "power meter" that goes into the 3.5" bay. i have a x2, 7900gt, 2 hdd, 1 optical, 2gb ram, wifi, tv tuner, 120mm fan and 80mm fan. when idling, i use around 130watts. when playing a game, recoding, etc it draws around 210 watts. so i figure the vid card draws around 100 watts at load.

next gen graphic cards are supposed to eat 400W alone... so that X1900 doesn't eat near 450W ALONE.

The video card draws quite a bit of power, but the processor is incredibly power frugal. The RAM is negligable. 8 USB, 4 HDD, and 3 CD-ROM's is a lot, but they won't all be operating at full power simultaneously. If you RAID, you might have all 4 HDD's going at full blast and 1 CD-ROM drive, let's say even 2 USB devices going full burn just for the sake of argument. So the maximum realistic load you're looking at is about 65 Watts for the CPU, 150 for the vid card, 100 for the HDD's, 25 for the CD-ROM drive, and 50 for the USB devices. That's less than 400 Watts, and it's being very conservative.

So unless you like wasting money, I recommend hanging onto what you've got.

Yeah, your 500 watt Antec is more than enough, don't waste your money.
