I just blew up my 3rd generic 850W PSU, so obviously that is not the way to go. The worst case scenario system I need to run is an I7 @ 3.8 running bigadv and 2 x 275 or 260 GTXs. The actual systems will probably be more like an I7 @ 3.4 and either a single 275/260 or a 275/260 and an 8800 GTS or similar. I'll probably try to pick up one at Best Buy today to get the rig that just went down back up, and I will need 3 more eventually. I would like to get off at cheap as possible without blowing them up every other day. The rig that is down now is an I7 @ 3.33 with a 260 GTX, and it blew up one 850w on Thursday and another one today. Any thoughts? Thanks

I run Corsair tx 750 supplies in most all my folding rigs...never had a failure yet...probably need a little more for what you're planning there though.

What was your total draw on the setup you had. The multi GPU boxes I run pull about 430 watts 24/7, so I would imagine that a -bigadv plus one card would only be around 400-450 watts. I'd think the TX 750 would hold that easy. New they're $120 at BB from what I remember.

I was looking at the 850W or 1000W version of that one. Is it a good one? I don't know much about brands for PSUs.

Corsair makes some great power supplies. You'll eliminate most of your issues having one as solid as this, and I would say the 850 or 1k would be fine too.

Another thing worth mentioning is that the PSUs are sucking air right from the HSF and voltage regulators, which get rather warm running 100% load on all 8 cores. These are in what amounts to mid-tower cases that are rather cramped. I am running them topless, but there is still a lot of heat being produced.

What kind of case do you use? If you've got the proper amount of air being pushed into your case, this shouldn't be a problem. The PS fans that pull air from this area (HSF and voltregs) is helping to ensure that fresher, cooler air is being drawn across those devices thus helping to keep them cooler as well.

The TX corsairs are definitely nice PSUs. I run one in my main box. However, since I bought the HX modular for my dedicated box I'll never go back to a TX model. Too damn many cables to have to deal with.

I have 4U server cases. This is basically what they look like, althought the I7 rigs have HSFs that blows air front to back instead of towards the PSU like the Phenom x4 rig in this picture (which runs beautifully on a BFG 450W PSU and has for weeks.)

Corsair's are in both of my DC'ing rigs. Never had an issue. The are solid. :)

Just got two Corsair 750 TX's. They should both be powering bigadv folders by this afternoon. Thanks for the suggestions and keep them coming. I still need two more, maybe three depending on the power needs for my "top secret" folding project.

For those of you keeping score, that will be 4 I7 rigs, various GPUs in the 260/275 range, and one "top secret" folder that should be bigadv-capable with ease once I am at full strength. The mower is warming up.....

If you can wait a bit, I recommend this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371025

It's better than the Corsair, partially modular, and comes out to cheaper than what Best Buy is charging for the TX750.

Is 750W enough for say two 275GTX's running full-bore plus all 8 cores of an I7? I don't know if I will ever have a system set up like that, but I would like to not have to replace the PSU if some good deals on 260's or better become available on

Antec PSU for low power draw systems, Corsair for the hungry boxen.

You should be fine with the 750.... you wont have a huge amount of headroom, but it should work. The fact that the TX uses one 12v rail helps. You wont be overloading one side of the PSU and have very little hit the other side.

It's plenty, and an i7 has four cores.

Antec is perfectly fine for hungry boxen. Antec's higher-end PSUs are just as good as if not better than anything Corsair makes. Also, the rail distribution is insignificant with the kinds of systems we're talking about.

Yes, that would be a very good choice as well. Keep in mind that you'll have a rat's nest of cables to deal with though.

4 physical cores + 4 additional virtual cores with HT is what I meant. The power draw has got to be much greater running HT, isn't it? They sure heat up a lot more with it on.

If you don't care what it looks like and you have room above the case and you don't plan on ever putting the top back on, it really isn't that bad. I just tie up anything I am not using and zip tie the mess to the top of the 5 1/4 drive bay

Did you get the 17.7 inch or 15.7 inch case? I got the 15's and it's damn cramped lol, kinda wish I stuck with the 17's
anyways, I'd recomend anything modular with the smaller cases

also, if you don't need the HDD cage lose it, that front fan isn't too bad without it in the way, keeps my i7 (stock) at 26*C full load

HT does increase the power draw, but not by nearly as much as an additional four cores would.

Some people have real space concerns to deal with, so I was just pointing that out for the sake of it. If you have room to spare, then all the better.

Zero, you'd be ashamed of mine then lol
I'll do a review of the 15.7" case as soon as I find a good image host

Evil and I have seen a savings of 40 watts or so with dual E5530 systems. So that might mean 25 watts or so with turning off HT in a 130w i7 chip. (maybe a bit more or a it less, also OC will change this as well)

They are the 17.7's, and they are still cramped. The HDD cage is gone in the two I have set up with I7's, mainly because the 260/275 GTX cards are too long to install it. I'm considering yanking the 5 1/4 cage as well if I can get the HDD mounted somehow.

It's enough to run my Skulltrail with 8 true cores, 4 FB-DIMM modules and four 8800GT cards. Everything is OCed as well.

I recommend Corsair and Antec. I also have two PCP&C 610W PSUs in other systems running since 2007-08 24/7 and recommend that manufacturer as well.

Ball up the remaining power cables and then set the HDD on top of that, thats what I did lol
