Power Supply Recommendation

Planning on building a new PC next year, and I'm going to do a little at a time. I'm thinking of starting with case and power supply. I was thinking of going with an 800 or 850 watt power supply, probably an 80 Plus Gold. But I notice a big dip in price when going down to 750 watts. I will only be running one video card, probably a 290x. I have not decided on Intel or AMD CPU but based on my past I will probably end up settling for the latest AMD CPU. I'm going to wait for the new stuff. But I thought I had read something about their top end CPUs being 220 watt TDP. What do you guys think, 850 or can I get by with 750? I don't plan on having any extra stuff other than the basics, probably an SSD and a 7200rpm hard drive.

Buying computer parts piece by piece over a wide time frame is not a good idea. You'll be better off taking the money you would have otherwise spent on a part and putting it in a jar or savings account until you get enough to buy it all at once.

Really? I love replies like this.

Well you should, but if you don't care then so be it.

A 290x under full load consumes ~440W at the wall. Without knowing exactly what CPU you're going with it's hard to tell what the power consumption will be. With that being said, even a 750W PSU will be overkill for a single GPU setup.

Not to mention if any of the parts you get are DOA, you'll have to send the part to the manufacturer since your 30 day return window will most likely be passed. Therefore you'll have to wait even longer to get a working part back.

Then you've got the fact that if you built a full computer in January, there is a good chance that if you have the same amount of money in March you'll be able to build a faster computer. Which means those parts you buy now might be obsolete by the time you get to use them.

A case and power supply's performance won't change at any time. I know what you're saying about cpu and video card but I plan to buy all that stuff at the same time. But I want to get the case and power supply out of the way. If I don't I'll end up spending it on something else and I'll be back at square one. I went back and looked at 750 watt gold power supplies this morning and it's not really that big of a difference in price as I thought.

Well no it probably wont but that's, that much of it's warranty getting wasted.

I wouldn't get hung up on the PSU's rating. Those aren't very reliable. You need to read real benchmarks on specific PSUs to see if they're good or not.

With that being said, 750W is still over kill for a single GPU setup. 550W should be plenty and if you want some wiggle room then go with a 650W unit.
