Hi I am looking to buy a new power supply as the one I have now which is a thermaltake 1000watts (W0155) is about 7 years old. It really has come though for me as its been through 4 PC builds over the years and I think its time to let it take some much needed rest and get a new one. I have 3 different power supply that I am interested in. I would like to get something that is future proof so I was looking at the Lepa G Series 1600W or the Enermax MaxRevo 1500W. I just don't know if I really will ever need all that wattage in the future so can't decide if one of those would be the best option. I also saw the review on hardocp on the SeaSonic X-1250 and got me very interested in it but I still can't make a decision. It would be great if you guys can help me make my decision and share some input on which one you think I should get out those or maybe recommend another power supply ?

What are you planning to power? Rather, what do you foresee yourself powering in the future? Is it a realistic goal, or just a dream?

I just updated my sig with my current hardware specs. I really don't plan to upgrade to a tri or quad sli for the time being unless its worth it in future cards cause right now you really do not get that much of a big jump in performance when going tri or quad sli compared to the performance gain of just adding a second card. I plan to upgrade to the haswell architecture once it gets released later this year if the performance gain is worth it. If not will wait for the Ivy Bridge-E but don't plan on getting more than one cpu. I do plan to heavily max overclock my future cpu and video cards that is why i was looking at the 1600 and 1500 watts power supply. As right now I think my current 1000 watts power supply might be limiting my overclock I don't know if its cause its degraded over the years or really is hitting its limit. I just do not know if 1250 watts will be future proof as its only 250 watts more than what I have now but I could be wrong. I hope you can give me some insight on which power supply you think would be best.

Does your phase change system run off of your power supply, or is it separate? Your system is a 650 watt system at best, + 300 for the phase change, if it runs off of your power supply. IB-E and Haswell will both use significantly less power than your 960. Haswell will be faster than IB-E in single threaded applications, IB-E 6 core processors will be faster in multithreaded situations where more than 4 cores are used.

The Thermaltake Toughpower 1000w is a good solid unit, and until it fails, there's really no reason to replace it unless you want a more efficient unit. Generally, talking about future proofing in computer hardware is a very bad idea. Just go with your realistic goals. SLI means 750 watts at most, +300 for phase change if it's running off of your power supply.

Hey first off thanks for the reply and your suggestions. My phase system is completely separate from my pc and does not use my power supply. I know you recommend to stick with my current power supply till it dies but I ended up buying the seasonic x-1250. Reason being my current power supply is showing some signs of it being to fail and I rather buy a new one than wait till it completely dies. Thanks once again for your input.
 
Well, I would have waited for a good price on a good power supply before buying it as backup ;)

And what do you mean signs of failing?
 
My pc some times restarts itself while gaming I know its the power supply as the +12V is showing a reading of 11.1 for a few sec sometimes then it goes back up to 11.9. I really do not want to risk it and keep using it and have my pc fry itself cause of the power supply.

How did you get the reading? If it was from a DMM, yeah, that is way out of spec, and you should replace it. If it was from software monitoring programs... well, they're not reliable at all.

Is that 11.1V with a meter or with monitoring software? Because I've had monitoring software report the +12V rail as 10.6xV and with another motherboard fluctuating every second between 6V and 8V. OTOH a digital meter said the voltage was always around 12.xxV.

What kind of capacitors are in your 1000W PSU? JonnyGuru said the one he tested had Chemicon model KY, which should last a long time (link).

Yea I tested it with a DMM when I got the readings. Sorry took so long to respond been kinda busy.
