Power supply problem

Today I had my second Antec 300 watt Smart Power go boom on me. When I say boom, I mean boom. Sparks and loud noise then the air smells funny like burnt wire.

I have no clue what can be causing this. I have my other machine (with an Enermax power supply) plugged into the same power strip(which may be the problem).

Any ideas of what can be causing this? Could the motherboard be causing this some how or am I just really unlucky with power supplies?

maybe its being strained too much by ur computer, i would opt for a higher wattage for next power supply. 400w should be fine.

More than likely it was your psu all along, but i've seen some name brand power strips wreak near havoc on electronics. Wouldn't hurt to buy another and make sure it has a high joule rating~over 1300(?)

Thanks for the replies. I am going to take the psu back now and try another. I will get a 400 or over and a new power strip with the suggestion you said.

Thanks again and wish me luck. My processor's (2400) heat sink was extremely hot to the touch after I found my machine sitting there but not responding. I hope it did not take out anything with it.

Here are my specs in case anyone else has any suggestions.

AMD Athlon 2400 @ 2ghz
ATI Radeon 9600XT@565/330
1024 DDR 266 ram
Asus A7S333
1x 32x cdrom drive.
Hercules PCI sound card (I forgot the type)

Update:

I bought a 430 watt Antec True Power. The machine powered up.

I did notice that when I turned on the machine, my CPU fan did not come on. I plugged it into a connector that my back case fan was plugged into and it worked. I am guessing that some of the power connectors on the motherboard are dead. Should I not use this machine until I get a new motherboard or will it be fine since it booted up and everything appears to be in working order minus the fan connectors?

Also, one more thing. I noticed that ever since I have moved this 2400 to this machine, the temps have gone up. I am now setting idle at 50c. At what temp should I start to worry?
