I got a enermax 465 watt psu from someone. computer powers on, but one of hte molex chains does not supply enough power to the harddrive. the other molex chain does.

is it cause the mobo is only using a 20 pin instead of 24 pin?

following is installed:

gigabyte p35
q9450 at stock
2 case fans
1 harddrive
1 4650 ati card
4gb ddr2 ram

and should i have the person get me a 20 to 24 pin adapter? will that help or no?

Its definitely not because its a 24pin... Is it modular? check the connections. Have a volt meter? Check the voltages. (if modular check both ends, @PSU and end of cable.)

nope not modular. he said he hadn't used the psu in 2 years but he did power it on to test it before he sent it. i doubt thatwould cause a problem.

should it still be safe to use by not using that molex chain? i dont' plan on using more than one harddrive.

is overclocking on stock volts out of the question then?

I wouldn't overclock on that thing. It was a decent PSU back in its day, but at this point it's old and apparently already having trouble, so I wouldn't risk pushing it more than you need to.

well all this stuff ran fine on a 300 watt mini itx psu till the mobo died. i think the psu is still ok. the q9450 is ok :) and the ram too :D
