Power supply problem?

Hey guys,

I have been having an issue with my computer. I was working one day and it shut off on me out of the blue. When I hit the power button, it comes on for 2 seconds and shuts off. I replaced the heatsink and processor fan, but it was still doing it. So I looked into changing the power supply. As I was examining the power supply, I noticed a red flip switch which apparently controls voltage. I switch it, turned the computer on, and it is working fine now. I went up to 220 volts. Is this dangerous? Does this have anything to do with why my computer is shutting off. Should I buy a new power supply or leave it like this?

Thanks for the help.

That switch is designed to switch your PSU to standards other than North America. You are only supposed to switch it to 220V if you are in Europe or elsewhere in the world that uses 220V. Do you live out of North America?

If you flipped that to 220V and it didn't frye your system, number one - you're lucky. Number 2, you probably need a PSU. Are you in USA?

No, I am in USA. Did not fry my computer however, soon as I read your replies I shut the computer off and unplugged the power supply. I turned it back to 135 and I am getting the same result. It turns on for about a second, and then shuts off immediately. I have already replaced the heatsink and fan, so I guess I will try replacing the power supply. Is there any way to test theses things?

By the way, I don't think my computer has been fried. I think my power supply is just not getting enough voltage through, so when I upped the voltage, I still wasn't getting full potential.
