well the power supply for my briefcase computer is being stupid

it is always on if the switch on the power supply is on, you cannot control whether the computer is on or off using the power button attached to the motherboard

now yesterday i extended the atx cable from it by cutting off a connector from another psu and cutting the primary one off and the soldering the colours together

also, being my stupid self, i didnt test the psu before i put it in the briefcase

so my question is, do some power supplies just do this, did i cross wire something? when extending the cable, all i did was hook up colour to colour so all should be good right?

>do some power supplies just do this
not in my experience.
>did i cross wire something?
seems likely
>when extending the cable, all i did was hook up colour to colour so all should be good right?
seems that there's a problem. I don't even know how to tell you to proceed with troubleshooting. I guess you could swap in a known good PSU in an attempt to prove it's not a fault of your motherboard.

If you hold the case power button in for 4 secs do you get a hard shutdown?

if it dosent turn off that means that the green wire on the psu is somehow getting grounded

ok, i tried the powersupply in another computer, same thing happened

that lead me to believe it was the powersupply that is the problem

so what i did to check if its shorted is hook up the powersupply not connected to computer and it didnt turn on when i hit the switch

i tried to do that short the green wire with the black wire thing, but couldnt turn on the ps like that either, so now im stumped, is the ps dead?

nope, sounds like you wired the green wire incorrectly...

alright, i have this idea in my head but its not gonna come out sounding right, so bear with me

look at the original connector. i HOPE you have the original connector, if you dont, disregard the rest of my post. look at the position of each color of wire. note the positions. now just match color of the wires from the PSU, to position on the new connector.

did that make sense?
