Is there any 3rd party program that will allow me to create a custom Power Scheme so I can choose to have only certain hard disks go to power off after XX minutes of inactivity? Windows only seems to have the option for all hard drives.

Is there a specific reason that you'd want to spin down your drives? It creates more wear and tear spining up and down than just leaving them on.

I'm not entirely sure I agree with this.

Running a drive that's doing nothing for 2 days, letting it generate all that heat has *got* to be worse than only powering the drive up on the "once in a blue moon" you need it.

My in home dell server has 4 drives. - They run all the time because they are in raid 0+1

However, my big beast with 12HDD's doesn't need all 12 running simultaneously.

My storage array with raid5? Yeah.

If that were how it actually worked, then i'd probably agree with you. But not only is windows not very smart about when to spin up/down, but also, how often are you really going to not use a hard drive for 2 days and then use? In that case, it would make more sense to have an external drive which you can selectively power up when needed.

Well it's just that I like to have my OS/Apps drives running 24/7. But a majority of my storage drives are only used once every few days. I do have an external hard drive but getting enclosures and wasting space with more isn't a viable option for me.

Was just curious if there is such a program. If not then oh well.
