I took apart my Dad's PC to install a tape backup at his office.
I inserted the tape backup software/hardware and also noticed that the CPU fan was connected to a power source directly from the power supply and not from the motherboard spot.
I moved the CPU fan to the motherboard power spot for it.

We went to power up his PC and the CPU fan and exhaust fan would spin for a fraction of a second and then stop and the PC would not boot. I assume the power supply must have got fried while we were messing with the PC. I give him one of mine and the PC starts up fine and he lets the PC run overnight but the backup software and hardware is having problems which may or may not be related. So his PC locked up this morning and he went to power down. Now his PC won't start with my new power supply. We came to my house and plugged the power supply into my PC and it worked fine.

If the motherboard CPU fan senser wasn't working properly would it cause the PC to not boot or not even startup and POST? I am not at his office so I can't try to put the CPU fan back onto a main power source directly from the power supply. We through away his old power supply because we thought it was bad.

Any ideas on what would cause the pc to do this?

nope just put it back the way it was and don't ask questions if it works ;)

Remove whatever hardware is not critical and try to start it. It may be something on your mobo--this encompasses everything directly on the mobo. Maybe your mobo? Maybe your CPU?

Take a look at the capicators on the mobo. Im pretty sure that if they are fried on the mobo, they will be puffed out at the top... I think..
