I was just curious on the experiences with batter life for linux users. I was thinking of making the jump over from XP and using Ubuntu. My biggest concern is the power management. To all the laptop linux users, please share your experiences.

I'm currently using a dell latitude d620, and get approx 6 hours with a 9-cell.

A valuable program is "powetop" - it will tell you ways to configure your system to reduce power usage, and can tell you exactly where in your system most power is being consumed.

Aside from that, I use cpufreq to manage my CPU speed, and I also use the ondemand power governor. Ondemand means that when my machine idles, the CPU scales all the way down, but when I max it out, it starts increasing the scaling until it is at full speed. Once the load is removed, it drops back down. Quite nice.
