Okay so I'm gonna be putting this motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ShowImage.aspx?CurImage=13-131-296-04.jpg&Image=13-131-296-02.jpg%2c13-131-296-03.jpg%2c13-131-296-04.jpg%2c13-131-296-05.jpg%2c13-131-296-08.jpg&S7ImageFlag=0&WaterMark=1&Item=N82E16813131296&Depa=0&Description=ASUS%20P5Q-E%20ATX%20Intel%20Motherboard
with this psu:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139006

The PSU has a 24-pin connector, but no extra four pin (although you can detach part of the 24 pin to make a 20+4 pin connector.

The motherboard has a 24 pin slot and a 4 pin slot.

Do I:
Plug in the 24 pin connector and leave the 4 pin slot alone?
Detach into a 20+4 connector, and leave some of the 24 pin slots open?
Get an adapter to plug in everything?

You need both the 24 pin and the 4 pin ... I would be very surprised if that PSU didn't have the 4 pin CPU power plug

EDIT: after looking at that board, I'm surprised the CPU power isn't 8 pin...

The PSU has both connectors. It states in the specs that it has a 20+4 pin and a 4/8 pin CPU power connector. The motherboard actually has an 8 pin CPU power, it just has a little blockoff plate in the picture so it looks like a 4 pin.

No..you NEED the 24 pin for the board AND the 8 pin for the CPU power..it wont work any other way,,

Your right....it seemed weird that it only had a 4 pin CPU power connector..:p

The PSU you're looking at has both the 20+4 connector, as well as one 4-pin CPU power connector and one 8-pin CPU power connector. You can use either the 4-pin or 8-pin connector, but I recommend using the 8-pin since it will provide more stable power to the CPU. In any case, the PSU does indeed have the necessary connectors. You just misread the specs.
