Starting to gather up the pieces for my new build and the orientation of the power connectors are a big consideration for me right now for aesthetic purposes. Most seem to have the connectors pointed toward the side panel but I thought I saw one pointing toward the front of the tower. Was I crazy or does this really exist? I'm looking at something like the GTX 470 performance wise (I have no favorite between ATI or nVidia).

ATI 5850 would be the closest thing at the moment. The 5870's have the side-facing connectors and the 5770 isn't in the same performance league as the 470. The leaked photos of the 68xx cards show them as having side-facing connectors as well.

I guess the assumption is that for longer cards, case clearance becomes an issue and the connectors must be moved to the side to gain some clearance against the drive bay rack.

Most of the cheaper cards are facing forward. Only really 58xx and 47x and above have the side ones.
