power calibration error with burner -fix?-

I use nero 6 and I have a yamaha 44x cd-rw and when I try to burn cd's I get power calibration errors. A restart usually fixes the problem and I can burn a couple cd's before it starts happening again. What causes this? what can I do?

Sometimes due to bad/incompatable media, othertimes it's software problems (Nero 6 has been notoriously bad for this), other times it's due to scratched and/or dusty lens. Not much you can do, some people have reported using canned air and a cd-rom cleaner to fix this, others firmware fixes. YMMV, but google usually will have info from people w/ your specific burner.

for now I'm gonna blame the media cause I was burning on some cheapo cd's my friend gave me, but I will clean it soon and try to get a cd-rom cleaner just in case. Thanks for your input.

Back in the days of 2 speed burners my Philips POS had the same problem, searched around a bit and on this model there was a problem with the head/lens guide rails/runners.

I opened up the drive and sprayed some teflon lockspray on there and
and worked flawlessly from then on.

I had this problem with my 24x Sony with all kinds of different media. Because it would usually happen after a few discs in a row, I suspected heat. I rearranged my optical drives to give the burner some breathing room, and the problem all but disappeared.
