using a small Bestbuy 7 port insignia hub, 2 usb 3.0. 2 sd card slots, hdmi and gigabit ethernet port. model is
NS-puchub219-c. Now I can use ethernet, 2 sd cards a 360 game dongle and a 1TB samsung or sandisk ssd W trim enabled sata to usb cable. However if I plug in a 2 TB micron 1100 It doesn't work, The 1tb ssds draw 1.2 amp and the Micron draws 1.7 amp. I think I need an external usb c power adaptor. Would this do the job?Google 18 watt usb c power supply
model number GA00193-US. this is 35 bucks also only one I could find locally..... I can use the 2tb micron straight to the Surface Go C port with no issue.... The hub manual states for full functionality you may need external power.... I really don't want to spend 50 -100 bucks on an adaptor.... also in the manual I just read that ports usb supports super speed data up to 5Gbps and dual port power supply reaches max 1.5 A. Does that mean that external power won't do any good?

Thanks for any info

How would this be plugged in? The short USB-C cable goes to your Surface. The USB-C on the side would be plugged in to a charger. And then the 2 USB3 Type A plugs are used for the harddrives?

USB-C can deliver high wattage because it's able to jack up the voltage, while leaving the amps low. Since wattage can generally be calculated as Volts X Amps. Keep the amps low and up the voltage (9V, 15V, 20V) and you get more wattage. But if you are using USB3 Type A connectors, Type A is limited to 5 Volts. So at 5 volts, you will run out of amps much quicker. 3 Amps is pretty high. Not just for the Surface, but for the hub itself. It probably has internal current limiters for safety. So even if you can get 2A from the Surface and 2A from the charger, the hub itself is probably not going to allow 4A to flow through itself.

You can always daisy chain hubs to break up power distribution (but is unsightly) or you can look into Y cables that allow you draw power from a 2 USB plugs at the same time.

If looking at Y cables, make sure the cable is USB3.

The Standard charger for surface go is not USB. It is a magnetic connector. THere is one usb c that can be used but it is really for a usb device. My 7 port mini hub plugs into the usb c and there is a usb c power in port on the minihub itself. I picked up a 90 watt usb c power supply at Best Buy and it works fine. I can even plug in two usb external drive now....
