im fairly new to [H] and overclocking (last OC was on a x2 4200+) but here it goes 
so i have been having a LOT of problems getting a decent overclock on my new rig, i7 860. i have been having to keep my ram under its rated 1600mhz for anything to POST and my temps have been through the roof, having to keep a close eye on things.
keeping vtt, pch, and pll at stock voltages, i was unable to get a stable 3.5ghz oc even with 1.3vcore (i think i even went all the way up to 1.35). i figured the issue had to be due to the stock vtt even though i dropped my qpi multi down to 32x so it was only running at 5.12 (160 bclk). bumped the vtt up to 1.21 with no success and kept trying (went all the way to 1.35 keeping vcore at 1.3 but still extremely unstable so backed off down to intels max of 1.21 again). seemed no matter what i did, 3.5 was not capable with my cooling bc raising vtt didn't help and vcore couldn't go any higher with temps in the extremely high 70's low 80's.
long story short, i bumped the pll to 1.98 (figured i was running vtt at intels max according to data sheet, why not push pll to intels spec'd max) bumped up the pch from 1.05 to 1.12 (the next step up on ga-p55-ud3r) kept my vtt at 1.21 and now im running 3.74 stable on 1.28vcore with realtemp showing cores in the low to mid 70's (back into intels thermal spec).
if these voltages are unsafe, please someone let me know but it seemed to fix a world of hurt and im in the process of figuring out what i can lower and still be stable. lookin like vcore will be between 1.275 and 1.3 (as stated above tryin 1.2825 as 1.275 failed after 6hrs p95) and will move onto vtt next as those two seem to have the biggest influence on temps. i am still running qpi at 32x and may see if i can keep it stable with decent temps at 36x once everything is said and done (at bclk of 170 this would only be 6.12)
anywho, maybe if your having problems with ur 860 and no one calls me a dumbass this thread will help you out. obviously with overclocking your always taking risks but i figure if i can push the voltage to the maximum intel says is "safe", an overclock within specs is a good overclock to me
